Marie's POV
Days.
Weeks.
Months went by and I just felt hopeless and confused.
Leo and I still talked to each other every day, but I could never read into it because if he really liked me, he would have asked me out on Valentine's Day when he was allegedly planning on it.
Did Ms Ravin tell me a lie to get me excited? Was this all some trick?
The creeping feeling of paranoia slowly set.
Of course, I had to confer with Amelia and Jade. They each brought two different perspectives to the table.
First there was Jade. I saw her first at gym so I pulled her aside when our teacher wasn't looking at our lousy push-ups and filled her in.
"You were totally played." Jade answered without looking at me, "That Ravin girl is toying with your feelings. She's totally onto you and your crush." Jade's green eyes sparkled as she went back to filing her nails with a nail file that she pulled out of her gym outfit.
Great. I'm such a loser for falling for this.
I went home feeling miserable and unsure of who to trust. So I texted Amelia. She has a strange faith in people and views things without drama.
"Maybe he chickened out. He might have had everything planned and forgot something he needed to make it all work. Like a bouquet of flowers or maybe a poster he made. Don't worry. That could come any day now!"
Then of course she could be right.
I just didn't know what to make of this situation.
Time went on.
Then, in a way I least expected it, I discovered the truth.
-----
I had to stay after school today to finish my ceramics project. The teacher is a demon, I swear. She's always had something against me. Mrs. Valdez.
I barely finished my clay woven basket when the late bell rang for us to go to our buses. I put my project away and left as quickly as I could in order to avoid Valdez.
I finally got to my bus and sat in the first seat because the guys in the back try to get touchy with the girls.
My friend Sadie was sitting there, so I sat with her.
"Hey Marie, are you excited for the ninth grade dance?" Sadie asked me.
"Yeah, I've had my dress since October. Are you going with anyone?" I wondered. No one had asked me to the dance, and it was later this month. I really hoped that I would get asked by Leo on Valentine's Day but that didn't happen.
"No. But I know a lot of people who were asked. Marissa is going with Justin, Gillian is going with Mike, and did you hear that Eliza had been asked three times and said no all three times?" Sadie exclaimed.
The bus started to roll and we pulled away from the school.
"Oh no I didn't hear about that. Who asked her?" I tried to keep up on the gossip and if it's gone this long without me knowing...
"Daniel Per, Joseph Hill and Leo Ravin." She told me.
Oh my gosh.
So he did ask somebody. And it wasn't me. Now I wish he just chickened out.
"Oh really? That's cool. How did Leo ask?" I tried not to seem obvious.
"On Valentine's Day, he sang a song for her in chorus and then asked her. I think she has choir the class period after you. But how sweet was his proposal!" Sadie exclaimed.
I just nodded.
"Yeah. So sweet."
