Marie's POV
As soon as I got home, I texted Jade and Amelia about what I saw and they were disappointed in Leo.
They offered to come over, but I had a choir rehearsal tonight so I wouldn't be home.
I hope that Leo won't be there.
Once I got to the rehearsal space, I put my things down and headed over to my other friend group.
Obviously, I told them about Leo and the mystery girl.
"Oh I know who that is. Her name is Jenna. She's a senior and a major know-it-all." Gia told me.
"Leo was hugging a senior girl? What if they've been on dates or kissed each other. Should I cut it off?" I panicked.
"Girl, you need to find yourself who is less of a boy and more of a man. " Laura said with a wink.
"You could use an upgrade from that jerk you're with now." Madeline scoffed.
Hearing someone call Leo a jerk made me upset, but then I realized that that's what he is now to me. Maybe she's right, I need an upgrade.
Jade decided to set me up with Zayn Matthews, a college intern at our school who allegedly has been crushing on me since I started dating Leo.
Since Leo thought it was okay to cheat on me, I think it's time for him to see what it feels like to feel betrayed by your love.
-----
The thought of cheating on Leo with Zayn played in my head all day. I feel bad for cheating, but if he can then I can too.
Seniors always seemed off limits to me but if Leo can get away with it, so can I.
I found myself thinking more about Zayn than Leo. I decided to stay after school today so maybe I could talk to him a little more.
The final bell of the day rang and we all flooded the hallways. I walked toward the music wing of my school when Jade bumped into me.
"Hey, are you coming on the bus today?" Jade asked.
"No, I'm staying after with Mr Matthews today." I smiled.
"Good for you! Just be careful, you don't want any teachers to see you." Jade warned raising an eyebrow.
"We're just talking. Nothing beyond that. Don't get any ideas." I walked away and continued walking to the choir room.
I heard Jade behind me call, "We'll see about that!"
I rolled my eyes and finally approached the choir door. I knocked softly so I wouldn't disturb him.
"Come in!" I heard from inside.
I pushed open the door to see Zayn sitting and playing his acoustic guitar.
For being an intern who already got into choir college, he stayed around school a lot.
"Oh, Marie. I didn't know you were coming. Here, sit." Zayn placed his guitar on the ground.
I sat down in the chair that he pulled over for me.
"Well, it's funny you're here, because I've been wanting to talk to you." He smiled.
"About what?" I had no idea what he would have to say to me. Why couldn't he have just told me during rehearsal or class?
"Um, the orchestra teacher I work with told me that we have an internship available with elementary school choir and that I should accept applications for the position. Instead, I wanted to just give it to you and tell him that you were the one chosen. The other choir members will never have to know that there was even an opening." Zayn offered.
This was a great opportunity and I was extremely grateful that he lined this up for me, but, why?
"Why wouldn't you offer it to everyone and see who the best would really be?" I asked. This whole thing was confusing.
"I would give it to you anyway. You are the best, and I really want you to be the one to get this opportunity." He muttered.
I looked up at his face. He seemed really serious.
"Why me? I'm only a sophomore. There are plenty of older choir members who could use this for their resume."
Matt got up and walked over closer to me.
"But you don't understand. You are more prepared for this position than any of the older girls. I know you want to go to college to be a music teacher because Jade told me." Zayn smiled, hoping I wouldn't question him further.
"Ok. I'll do it because you're right, it's a great opportunity. I just don't get why you're handing me this opportunity. You're an intern and you could get in serious trouble for bias. Your mentor could find out and--"
"I think you're special, ok?" Zayn half-shouted, interrupting me.
In the moment, all I could do was look at him while he thought about the volume of what he had just said.
"Oh. Ok. I'll take the position. Thanks, Zayn." I murmured. I picked up my backpack and left the room, heading for the after school buses. My head was spinning and all I wanted was to go home.
Little did I know that this moment really affected Zayn. After I left, he cursed at himself and pounded the wall in frustration.
