Chapter: 1

5 years later...

Serena's POV:

A soft sigh escapes from my lips as I was walking down the beautiful street of Venice. A warm smile was spreading across my lips while watching the people that were chatting away with the excitement of tonight's event. That's where the magic happens or so everyone says. At night, everything changes into laughter and fun. People enjoy their time partying and forgetting all about their troubles. It was a wonderful sight to see everyone so happy on this sunny day. I look around the city to see everyone talking or either laughing about something. There were jesters out getting ready for tonight's events. The carnival is being held here in Venice, Italy. The events last quite a long time through these months of excitement.

The city was warm and loving as everyone was getting ready for the night. All the women get to wear beautiful gowns and beautiful masks with either their hair up or down. I can't wait for tonight! My entire being was a nervous wreck for tonight. I have no clue what gown to wear much less what color of a masquerade mask that will match the gown. I will have to find something suitable to my liking. A warm smile was still on my face while my feet guided me over the bridge as a familiar face was rushing up to me with a huge grin on her beautiful lips.

My best friend Marisilia threw her arms around me with an excited squeal before stepping away from me. She was baring a huge smile on her lovely heart-shaped face as her blonde hair was tightly woven into a bun on top of her head. Her dark green eyes were vibrant with warmth and there was excitement in those eyes as it was contiguous. It was quite obvious that my friend is an open book. So, it's very easy to read her without having her telling to tell me everything. She squealed even more before speaking, "Tonight is going to be lovely! Serena, have you pick out a dress yet? What about your mask?"

I chuckled softly while shaking my head, "No. I haven't, Marisilia."

She made a face at me while grabbing my hands and was pulling me forward, "Then you have to come over! I have plenty of dresses and masks for you to wear tonight!"

"Wait! Marisilia!" I protested, but she was already pulling me over the bridge. We avoid the people, only to not bump into them. We were laughing as we were rushing down the street as if we were little girls and not proper young ladies. Our laughter was bouncing all around us while we hurried to her place. Happiness was rushing through my veins and I was exhilarated from being able to dance at the masquerade dance. It was going to be held in the square tonight. We skid to a stop by her house while we were out of breath, but we were still smiling. We went inside her home and her brothers were instantly there, running down the hall with happy smiles on their lips. We share an amused look before we realized that there was a woman shouting. It was coming from the hallway that leads into her lounge area.

"Ah, Marisilia. You brought Serena." Marisilia's mother spoke with a welcoming smile on her face while walking over to greet me. Her beautiful skirts swishing around her while kissing my cheeks in greeting and I did the same with her.

She kisses her daughter's cheek as well before they ended up hugging each other, "Welcome home, my daughter."

My chest swells with love for my friend and I was smiling warmly at them. My friend Marisila told her mother, "I'm going to dress her up tonight for the masquerade dance."

Before her mother could reply, I felt little arms come around me and her brothers shouted, "Look it's Serena! The kind lady!"

I chuckled at her little brothers before bringing out two feathers from my pouch and holding them out to each of them. It was easy to please them, especially with bird feathers. Both of the boys took the feathers while giggling with happiness, "Here, I brought you both a gift."
