"I've got a joke," Lafayette said as he dipped his bread into his soup.
John rolled his eyes. "No one wants to hear it."
"I do," said a quiet voice. Eliza smiled gently at Lafayette. "I like jokes."
"Ha!" Lafayette flourished his spoon in triumph. "Now this is a Schuyler I enjoy having around!"
Eliza's cheeks colored slightly.
"Alright, alright, get on with it," Alex said, slightly upset at his friend for no apparent reason.
The other boy gave him a knowing look and a wink, before continuing.
"Who's the angriest person in our class?"
"Who?" Eliza immediately asked.
"Guess, mon cher," Lafayette taunted.
"Hamilton," Mulligan guessed, and John snorted into his soup, almost spilling it all over the table.
"Touché. But that is not the answer.
"Who then?" Eliza asked impatiently.
"Mad-ison." He grinned at his own cleverness.
Alex laughed. "I can't help but admit. That was a good one."
He gave Lafayette a high-five."Hamilton, can I speak with you?"
At the voice behind him Alex immediately stiffened. He turned to see the class president: George Washington.
"Of course." Alex stood up, wondering what Washington could possibly want from him.
"I'll talk to you guys later," he mumbled to the rest of the group.Washington led the way out into the hallway, and leaned against the wall.
"I heard you were still upset yesterday at the results of the election."
"No! Of course not! I was glad you won! King needed to go."
"That's not what I meant."
Alex pretended to be confused. "Then what did you mean?"
"You were upset over my choice of vice-president."
"Well we've known it would be Adams ever since you started your campaign."
"And you never got over the fact I didn't chose you. So now you're treating Adams badly out of spite."
Alex gritted his teeth. "Of course I am! I'm much more suited to the job than Adams! I don't know what you were thinking!"
Washington sighed. "Alex, I didn't chose you for exactly this reason! You're far too prone to exploding in anger! I need someone dependable, who uses their head."
"But-"
"But nothing. I expect you to be respectful of my decision, and to try and move on."
Alex bowed his head. "Fine."
"Good, now go have some fun." With a grin, Washington pushed off the wall and strode back into the cafeteria.
After a moment, Alex followed.

Alex grinned as he gathered his things and prepared to head to home. They were starting a project in history next week, and he was very excited. History was his favorite subject.
As he walked towards the door, he passed Maria.
She smiled at him, and slipped a paper into his hand, their fingers fumbling awkwardly with the pass.
As soon as he got home, he ran up to his room and opened the note.
Hamilton,
Foriv me. I cant talk to u tooday.
Sinceerky,

He had forgotten both about their promise to talk again, and what an awful speller Maria was
