The next day Alex walked into school with his head down.
John and Lafayette did their best to cheer him up, but he ignored their jokes and teasing. He wasn't in the mood for laughing.
"Hey Grumps," Mulligan said as he joined the group, "why the long face?"
"I don't want to talk about it," Alex muttered, idly watching his feet on the hallway floor.
When he glanced up his eyes caught on a blur of blue color, away to the right. He turned; there was Eliza Schuyler. She was dressed in a blue shirt that brought out her natural beauty, and a pair of black jeans.
She was talking with Angelica and Burr.
And she was laughing.
The sight cut deep into Alex's heart, and he knew what he had to do.
"I'll be back in a sec," he called over his shoulder to the other boys, running towards the small group on the other side of the hallway.
His hand touched Eliza's shoulder and she turned, jerking her shoulder away when she saw who it was.
"What do you want Hamilton?"
"Can I talk to you," he asked quietly, trying to ignore the hostile looks he was receiving from Angelica and Burr. "Alone."
She let out a sigh. "Fine."
They stepped a few feet away from the others--just enough so their conversation wouldn't be overheard--and Eliza crossed her arms.
"Alright, what is it?"
"Look, Eliza. I messed up. Really badly."
She snorted. "Which time are you talking about?"
Alex took a deep breath. "I'm talking about what I said to you last week. It wasn't fair, and it wasn't true. And I'm really, really sorry."
Eliza shifted slightly, tightening her arms around her defensively. "I don't care."
"Sorry, what?" he asked, confused. Wasn't this what she wanted?
"I don't care if you're sorry." she replied. "You still said it. And I can't forgive something like that. So you can just stay away from me. I don't need friends who use me and hurt me when they're upset."
With that, she stalked away, leaving Alex standing there alone.
What did she mean 'use her'?

Alex went through the rest of the day downcast.
He had overcome his pride to apologize to the girl who would make the best friend in the world, and she hadn't accepted. She had blatantly told him she didn't care and walked away from him.
Him.
Alexander Hamilton.
Top of the class; brilliant; and, if he did say so himself, blindingly handsome.
His hands clenched into fists, and he gritted his teeth. Well she wasn't worth it anyway!
If she didn't see the amazingness in him, then she didn't deserve to be part of his life.

Despite his defiant attitude, Alex found he couldn't find happiness, even with his friends. He just wasn't in the mood to be joking around.
They tried their best to cheer him up, but he found he didn't have it in him to laugh at even one of Lafayette's jokes.
"What's wrong?" John finally said to him as they walked out of their last class. "I hate seeing you this way."
"I don't want to talk about it."
"Please?" his friend pleaded.
Alex sighed. "I apologized to Eliza for something I said, and she totally shut me down."
John's mouth dropped open. "You what?!"
"I apologized," Alex grumbled.
"Wow." John passed a hand over his hair. "That girl doesn't realize how lucky she is."
"I know, right?!" Alex burst out. "She should be thankful!"
"Woah woah woah. I was joking." John gave a small grin. "Did she give a reason?"
"She said she didn't need a friend who hurt and used her."
"Used her?"
"I don't know!" Alex's voice raised in pitch. "I think Burr's been telling her things."
"Well," John reasoned. "Why don't you go and work it out with her?"
Alex shook his head. "She's not gonna talk to me."
"Are you sure?"
"You didn't see the way she looked at me," Alex replied. "There's no way she's gonna let me anywhere near her. And don't get me started on Angelica."
John nodded knowingly. "Oh that is a good point. Angelica is scary when she's mad."
Alex agreed and they headed pushed open the doors and headed out onto the sidewalk.
A/N: I'm baaaack! (From church camp at the beach! Aw yeah! (But I'm writing this before I've left, lol))
What should Alex do? Thoughts?
Vote and comment if you want to know what will happen! (Not that I'll tell you, lol)
