The next week at school Alex had his chance to vote.
It had been a tie after all, so his vote made all the difference. It was him who would decide who the next class president would be.
He considered for a long time.
Burr or Jefferson.
Jefferson or Burr.
Burr:
The boy he'd known for years, who didn't seem to care much about anything (except maybe Angelica Schuyler).
Or Jefferson:
The boy who had just turned up at the school and picked a fight with him. Who was crazy passionate, but in a way that annoyed Alex out of his mind.
Fire or water?
Someone he disliked or someone he hated?
Someone who would put all of himself into what he did or someone who couldn't care less?
Alex cast his vote.
The rest of the class would find out in their last period.

Alex walked down the hall with John, but his mind was far away.
He was back to the issue of Maria.
Was she right for him? Should he stay with her? Or did he want something else in a relationship?
What did he want in a relationship?
Even as he asked himself this question he knew the answer: he wanted nothing more than a friend to hang out with.
What use was anything else to him? Why bother with someone you didn't even like spending time with?
As these thoughts raced through his mind the picture of a girl came to the front of his thoughts.
Eliza.
She was his friend. Despite what he's said to her, he really did enjoy having her around. He could see himself spending time with her on a regular basis and enjoying it. He wanted to get to know her better.
Too bad you destroyed any chance you had with her Alex, he reminded himself. She probably hates you now.
With a sigh he pushed her out of his mind.
What could he do?
Apologize?
Could he make himself do that? And even if it was worth it would she forgive him?
He could worry about that later. One thing at a time.
"Hey Alex, what'ch'ya thinking about?" John bumped into his arm casually.
"Hmm? Oh nothing really." Alex spotted Maria walking down the hall towards them. "Hey, I'll catch up with you in a minute. There's something I need to do."
"Fine, whatever," John muttered as Alex walked away. "Go see your girlfriend because she's so much more important than me."
Alex pulled Maria to the side.
"Hey Hamilton," she smirked.
"Hey. . ." Alex ran a hand through his hair. "I'm really sorry to have to say this, but I just don't think I can be in a relationship with you anymore."
Maria smiled lightly at him. "That's okay. I was thinking the same thing actually. My affections have turned. . . Elsewhere."
Alex couldn't help but feel a pang of pain at that. Was he really do easy to move on from?
