Chapter XVII: Unworthy

That night Alex found he couldn't sleep.

Something was keeping him awake.

The moon was shining through his bedroom window, faintly lighting the room, but it wasn't that. He had slept with more light than that before.

He thought back to if he had had any caffeine before bed, but he hadn't.

But something had him awake.

And then, with a sigh, he realized he could deny it no longer.

It had been on his conscience all day.

He had no right to get upset at Eliza for not forgiving him.

He had been a total jerk to her, and he never deserved to be near her again.

The things he had said. . .

Of course she wouldn't forgive him--he would never forgive him either.

She was so beautiful and innocent. And he was just an arrogant jerk.

So what he was top of his class? What was that worth if he treated everyone like dirt?

He would be left lonely and bitter if he kept this up.

How John, Lafayette, and Mulligan put up with him was a wonder. They deserved better.

And Philip, that kid looked up to him. What kind of role model was he?

Maria had liked him. But she was so shallow that that didn't mean much. And she had abandoned him anyway.

No, he reminded himself, he had broken up with her. But it was for the best.

With a groan, Alex burried his head in his pillow.

He was such an idiot.

Eliza deserved better than him.

Angelica knew it, Burr knew it, and now even Eliza knew it.

But he hadn't realized it until too late.

And now he had hurt her.

Maybe it's better this way, he thought. This way I won't hurt her again.
