"Alex," An infuriatingly calm voice greeted him as the other boy slid into the seat across from his.

Alex gritted his teeth. "Burr."

"How are you?"

"Fine."

They sat in silence for a long moment, Alex desperately searching the crowded cafeteria for his friends. But they were nowhere to be seen.

"What do you want, Burr?"

"I want to talk about the election."

Oh no. Not this again.

"What about it?"

"I heard you were mad because Adams is vice-president."

"Who told you that?"

"Word gets around."

"Well, frankly, it's none of your business."

"Alex, I've know you since elementary school-"

"Sad, but true," Alex muttered.

Burr ignored him. "-And I know how worked up you can get about the smallest things."

"This isn't a small thing!" Alex growled through gritted teeth.

"Yes, it is. We've known Adams was vice-president for a long time. You should be over it by now. It may be a disappointment, but you're overreacting."

"Overreacting?! Do you know how hard I've worked to get the scores I do?!"

"Why do you get so worked up about every little thing?! Adams is the perfect choice. And you need to accept that, and respect him."

"Shut up." Alex stood and angrily stalked away.

He found the table where his friends had gathered and slumped into the seat between John and Lafayette, across from Eliza, who had joined them again. Seeing how upset he was, his friends wisely left him alone, though Eliza cast him a concerned look.

After a few minutes of him sulking, and his friends joking around and eating their lunches, another girl came up beside Eliza.

Angelica Schuyler. The most popular girl in school. Smart, witty, charismatic, and pretty.

And also Eliza's older sister.

She bent down to say something to Eliza, whatever it was drowned out by the sound of many people talking at once. However it must have been important, because Eliza stood and both of them made their way out of the cafeteria.

But, as Angelica turned away from the table, she sent a smile and a wink over her shoulder to Alex.

He was too flustered to do anything but smile stupidly back.

Burr walked quickly down the hallway, trying not the lose the two girls he was tailing. He had seen Angelica leave the cafeteria with Eliza, and followed them.

He needed to find her. See her. Talk to her.

They turned into the nurses office, and Burr waited anxiously outside. Was she okay? Had she gotten hurt?

But then she came out, completely fine, and alone.

"Angelica." He greeted her calmly.

"Aaron." She looked surprised.

"Hey. . ." He hesitated awkwardly, and she gestured for him to continue. "I was wondering if you wanted to hang out sometime. You know, maybe get a soda or something." He held his breath.

It was a long time before she spoke. "Why?"

He shrugged. "Why not? You're a pretty, charming young woman."

She snorted. "Burr, you disgust me."

Then she stalked away, leaving a baffled boy behind her in the hallway.
