First, im not against trigger warnings, because that would be completely illogical.
What is a trigger warning?
A trigger warning is a MEDICAL term. This may come as a surprise to you, but many people don't know this. A trigger warning is something to avoid flashbacks, PTSD, abuse, shutdowns, anxiety attacks. It is used to alert people when an internet post, book, article, picture, video, audio clip, or some other media can "trigger" a potentially cause an extremely negative reaction, as mentioned before. Their mind literally starts reliving the past, even though everything can be fine at the moment. It is NOT something someone can use to avoid a minor discomfort.
People usually tell me to not get upset about people making "triggered" jokes because people "dont know how to take a joke"
For any of you that have never had any trauma, think back to the scariest moment of your life. Maybe it was a shot. Maybe it was one of your loved ones passing away. Whatever it was, it must have felt horrible. It probably felt like the world was going to end. I want you to remember the pain and fear you felt. Horrible right?
But the thing is, that it is just a memory. You know it is a memory, so your brain automatically understands that, that the exact same thing wont probably happen again. What if your brain didnt? What if all your pain suddenly came thrashing at you, and you couldnt do anything about it? All because someone said something, or you looked at a certain picture, video, billboard, ad, trailer, movie, or anything that reminded you of the incident that happened.
Bad. Right?
THAT is what trigger warnings are for. Again, it is NOT to avoid minor discomfort, or use it when the content is slightly gross, because it might solicit an extreme change in someones mental health and well-being (sarcasm).
This needs to stop.
