Chapter 20, everyone!!

Yay!!

My economics text book keeps staring at me, I just keep ignoring.

I'm getting obsessed with old songs... Obsessed...

Anywho,

Chapter 20

I watched Alex gulp down water. We were walking down to Rayne's house again. Sasha barked happily. I guiltily realized I hadn't walked her in a while.

Hey, in my defense we went on field trips everyday! That was exercise enough!

Susan had changed to flats. Her hair was up in a high ponytail like mine. We soon reached the clearing where the little house was. We walked slowly to the door. It was low and hung on one hinge. Robin nudged it open with his foot. It was dark inside. I fished the flashlight I'd brought out of my backpack and flashed the light into the house.

"Bats!"

I ducked just as I heard Alex shout. A few dozen bats flew out of the tiny room. How they all fitted inside in the first place I will never know.

Susan's eyes were wide, her hair disheveled.

"Violet, do you think there'll be rats in there?"

I froze. Ho ho, no way was I going in there now.

Alex tried to coax us into coming.

"Pretty sure, there are no rats." she said.

"What is wrong with you?" Robin asked, "Of course there are going to be rats in there!"

Alex face palmed as Susan and I giggled.

"What?"

I just shook my head at Robin and stepped into the house.

"Hey, kids!"

We all jumped.

Two policemen emerged from the woods. They ran up to us, their faces stern.

"No one is allowed in there. Out, NOW!"

We complied.

Larry walked over to them. He talked for a while mentioning granpapa's name. Immediately they broke into grins and overly polite behavior. They still wouldn't let us into Rayne's house though.

I sighed.

What a waste of time.

---

"What a waste of time!" Robin kicked a stone.

Sunlight filtered through the leaves of the trees overhead. It seemed to form a patchwork of different shades of green on the forest floor. Funny how my name being Violet, I still loved green. It was vibrant and calm at the same time. My favourite colour.

We'd entered the woods ten minutes ago, right after the cops had chased us away. They wouldn't let us into the woods either! Something about bears. We'd sneaked into the forest when they weren't looking.

We all wanted to walk our frustration and we knew Larry would never let us go very far into the woods after seeing that 'Beware Of Bears' sign.

Larry sighed.

We were all unhappy and disappointed and he could never bear that.

I sat down on a small boulder, "Let's just enjoy the calm for a bit."
