Recap:

I looked around. This wasn't a good place. It felt wrong just standing here. Something illegal was probably going on here, What if Rayne was somewhere here? That would be scary.

The room was very spacious. The huge wall of crates ended halfway into the room.

Alex opened her mouth, probably just asking if we could walk over to the other side, when we heard it.

Two male voices.

Very, very close.

Chapter 21

"Quick."

With that, Robin, Alex, Larry and I raced towards the dark tunnel, away from the sound of echoing footsteps. We entered the dark but Robin caught me by the arm, stopping me from running further in.

"They didn't hear us! Let's listen to what they're saying!" He whispered.

I couldn't believe the idiot wanted to continue snooping when danger was this close.

I looked over at Larry in protest but he was pressed against the other wall of the tunnel, keenly listening to the conversation. Alex was beside him, doing the same. Robin handed me my switched-off torch. I pocketed it and listened.

"The boss was mad."

"Rayne Smith, eh? Everyone thought that doormat was dead!"

"That old goat was a cunning one."

"He probably faked it because of the contract and all."

One man whistled, "Well, he's sure gonna wish he WERE dead now. The boss was never nice to him to begin with."

Someone chuckled.

I felt Robin tug at my arm.

"Softly," he whispered," Let's go. They're getting closer. Be quiet, okay?"

I nodded, not sure if he could see me. We joined Alex and Larry quietly. We slowly walked, the job becoming trickier because it was dark.

We could still hear bits and pieces of what the men were talking.

"... dead and escaped... gang..."

"... relief... now?..."

"... know... jewels..."

"Fraud... killed... mad... angry... Nero."

Robin stopped when we heard the last word. We all did, waiting for what the man would say next, our ears strained. It was shocking how these men/crooks/criminals/whoever were talking about Rayne and now, Nero!

"Hey!" We could hear clearly as one of the men started to shout, "One of the crates is open!"

Robin's whisper was hoarse, "Run!"

I switched on the torchlight and we all ran. They didn't hear us though, made clear by the fact that they didn't follow. Maybe they forgot this tunnel existed. Maybe they thought it was a dead end. Which it kind of was...

I stopped in the first room, panting and out of breath.

I couldn't believe we'd just found an underground hideout and then two men talking about Rayne. I wanted to know how they knew Nero.
