Chapter 27

"Way to go, Sash!" I hollered.

Alex grinned at my dog before taking the frisbee, she held in her mouth, back.

Susan and I sat on the sand watching Alex play frisbee with Sasha.

Two days had passed since Nero's gang had been split up by the police. (All thanks to us, ladies and gentlemen. We did all the work.)

Our parents had been surprised at how dangerous the case had actually been.

They couldn't exactly punish us but they did lecture about how irresponsibly immature we'd been. Larry got the worst of it.

Poor Larry.

Grandmama had given the fake casket back to the police. Now that Logan was gone, we didn't have to hold on to it.

We'd split up after that and just went around having fun. I still needed to take everyone to Pete's bakery.

It had been a while since I'd last seen Robert.

We were sitting at the waterfalls now.

Robin had gone trekking with Larry and Am. I'd stayed with Alex and Susan.

Lord Ed suddenly flew through the branches of the trees to perch on my head.

"TROUBLE, TROUBLE!!" He squawked.

I grinned as Alex rolled her eyes.

"What's wrong, Lord Ed?" Susan asked, sarcastically "Are we out of crackers? Gee, that would be trouble."

"Actually, that would." I stated quite seriously while Alex nodded.

Susan sighed.

"THE GOLD, THE GOLD!" Lord Ed squawked again.

Uh oh.

Robin came through the trees, waving his phone in the air, "Robert wants to talk to us. Something's happened. He wants us to come over to Uncle Mark's office immediately."

I got up, dusting off my jeans.

What could have happened?

Logan was dead.

Nero was in police custody.

What could have gone wrong?

                  --------------------

"The second casket with the real gold in it was stolen lat night." Mark stated, his face set grim.

"Say what?!?" Alex echoed what had gone through my mind.

I was confused. Hadn't we caught the thieves who'd been responsible for the break-ins? The ones who'd wanted to steal Jhembulingam's treasure? What the... ?

"I don't understand," Mark frowned.

You're not the only one, buddy.

"Did any of Nero's men, maybe...?" Robert tried.

Mark shook his head, "No. That's what is so strange. Logan is dead. Nero is in jail."

"Did Logan know anyone else?"

"No. He worked alone. Nero and his entire gang are under custody now. Nero was a total sadist too."

"He was?" Susan asked.

Uncle Mark nodded, "His men were bound under a contract. They all lived a good life but make one mistake and you'd get whipped."

I cringed, "Seriously?"

Mark continued, "Apparently Rayne was the one who saw the most of that room. He could never keep his mouth shut."

"Ugh." Alex said and I couldn't have put it better myself. Torture, huh?

Uncle Mark scratched the back of his neck, "We're still confused. This is scary. Ah!"

Nice to know he was as much of a dramaqueen as any of us.

"Oh!" Robin's chair pushed backwards when he stood.

I looked up. His face was strained, like he was thinking really hard.

Alex looked bored, "What?"

He shook his head, "Excuse me." He ran out of the room.

My cousins each looked at each other and then they all turned to me.

I narrowed my eyes at them, "What?"

"Stop him." Susan said.

"Huh?"

"Whatever he's upto," Alex said, "Can't be smart. Go stop him."

I sighed and stood up, "Yeah, okay." And with  that I exitted Uncle Mark's cabin.

I went out of the silent police station.

I spotted Robin's running figure and raced after it.

"Robin!" I screamed. "Wait!"

He turned around, still skipping backwards. His face was bright with excitement, his arms fidgetted and his entire body crackled with impatience.

Only a few feet separated us as I raced towards him.

"What?" He shouted back, still making his way backward.

I ran a little faster, his excitement somehow seeping into me. "Where are you going?"

"I know who did it!" He shouted.

"Did what?"

His face was full of impatience, "Three guesses, Chocolate."

"Stealing the casket?" I guessed.

"Yes!!"

I ran a little more. Nearing his jumping form now. "Who?"

His face was still bright, "How many bad guys knew about the casket?"

"Two?" I asked, "Logan and Nero."

"Wrong!" He yelled, triumphant. "Rayne did too!"

"Okay, but he's... Oh Robin, he's dead!"

"He faked it once!" Robin's voice was charged with excitement, "He can do it again!"

That was a pretty cool theory, but could it be true?

I caught up with him. "You're sure of this?"

He started running now that I was beside him. I kept up.

"Pretty sure."

"So where are you going now?"

"The secret lair."

"Why?"

"Which is the one place Rayne would want to stand and gloat about his victory?"

I thought for a while. A light went on.

"The whipping room."

Robin hi-fived me as we ran to the forest where the openingto the lair was.
