Chapter 16
Grating cheddar cheese is hard work. I struggled with the slippery slab of cheese for a full ten minutes. Sasha wasn't making my job any easier. I think she smelt a new dog somewhere near my fifty mile radius because she constantly kept watch over my legs.
I sighed.
Am looked over from where she was brushing olive oil on the salmon.
"Want help with that?" she asked.
I shook my head. "No."
That would be embarrassing. Besides, I was a great cook! It was just that I wasn't very good at the little stuff. Little stuff as in cutting vegetables, setting the timer right, scrambling eggs... yeah. Little stuff like that. The clock read 8:35 PM.
"Six cans of Pepsi!" Alex announced, skipping into the kitchen and keeping the grocery bag on the table.
"Somebody wanted milk?" Robin asked as he placed his own package next to Alex's.
Am thanked the troublesome twosome for shopping for her.
Cue their exit but no.
They decided to stick around and watch me wrestle with the cheese.
Every time it slipped my hand, they cheered and clapped. I gritted my teeth.
Making fun of me seemed to come naturally.
"Breaking news..." Susan said in her best 'news anchor' voice as she entered the kitchen.
Larry came in after her.
Lord Ed shifted from Robin's shoulder to Larry and began to affectionately nibble his ear. Well however lovingly, it still looked painful.
Two hours ago, Larry and Susan had gone over to the local police station to check and see the criminal- the thief Robert had caught.
Our parents had decided to take my grandmother to dinner. We'd passed, saying we'd cook dinner at home, which was what Am was presently doing while I tried to keep the stupid cheese in my hands.
"That looks fun." Susan remarked.
"It is!" Robin exclaimed and went back to resting his chin on his hands to watch my fight with the cheese.
Were they trying to be funny?
I didn't see anything humorous about the situation.
Larry perched on a stool, stroking Lord Ed's feathers. "The man's name is Smith Rayne. He's 35 years old. He lives here in the village, in a small house, a few blocks from here. He wouldn't say anything. The police had him identified, which isn't hard to do in a town like this where everyone seems to know everyone."
"Alright!" Robin whooped. "This case officially begins!"
Larry smiled. "We'll just find out who his friends are and narrow the list down."
I grew excited.
We could 'solve' this. A real case!
In that fraction of second where I lost my concentration, Mr. Cheese slipped through my fingers, sailed across the room and landed on Robin's head. A flash of light and Alex had captured the precious memory on her phone.
