Chapter 18

The things you do for your parents.

My parents were so lucky to have me. Could they have gotten a better and more obedient kid? I think not.

A few of my father's old friends and cousins were over. They'd brought half the town over to see 'Ol' Dave' (my dad). Susan and I were seated politely in two chairs. We tried our best to follow the conversation with painful grins on our faces.

"I remember jumping off the wall of our school went on!"

"Liar! Our school didn't have walls!"

"So Lola has just given birth to a healthy calf."

"My goat eats so much!"

"My chicken is sick."

"My cow doesn't eat properly."

Yeah, I so wanted to know how his animals were doing. It was fascinating how they talked more about their animals than their own kids.

I felt bad for the poor fellow who was talking animatedly at the moment. He was going to get judged on what he said now and what he said now would get multiplied and divided till it doesn't even remotely come close to what he actually said.

My sis and I just plastered fake smiles on our faces the entire time. It must've been kinda scary 'cause everytime he looked at us, we still had that fake smile on our faces.

Alex was by the door with a strained smile on her own lips. She'd also somehow managed to let people now that if they so much as dared to address her, she'd strangle them with her bare hands.

I wanted to howl in frustration. Am shot us a sympathetic smile from the dark hallway leading away from here. Robin... was he videotaping this? Why that little...

All I wanted right now was a miracle.

"My good friends!"

I knew that voice.

Susan, Robin, Am and I turned to the door. Robert had just walked in. He looked shocked to see what looked like an army sitting in grandmother's living room. He also looked like he wanted to run away.

Too late, though.

"Is that Nathan's boy?" One of the guests asked.

"I believe it is! Look at that ugly nose."

I felt sorry for Robert. His face looked like he'd just taken a punch to his stomach and probably his ego.

"Come here, son." One of the men invited.

"I... no... Would love to but I have things to do..."

Even Robert knew that once you got sucked into a group like this, you'll have to listen to them thinking aloud and most times, it wasn't pretty.

"Quick," Susan shout-whispered to me "Get him to stay! That way we can leave!!"

My head shot up at that.

"No matter, son. Grab a chair and stay a while." My dad said.

And what a while it was going to be! I owed my dad one but for now Susan and I just got up and quickly exited the room. The guests had fixed their attention on poor Robert like he was the prize dinner. Which, technically, he was. They were going to chew him out.
