Kat’s POV
After walking for another 10 minutes, we finally came across a small ice cream stand. I grinned. Ice cream was my favorite thing ever. We walked up to the window, as the cashier said, “Hi, how can I help you?” She smiled at Jeff and I. “Uhm, what do you want?” he asked me. “Uh, do you have Cookie Dough?” I asked. She smiled, “Yep, coming right up, and what would you like?” she turned to Jeff. “I’ll have vanilla, thank you.” He said. She smiled and closed the window, not wanting to let the cool air out.
A couple of moments later, the window opened again. “Here you go, that’ll be $8.50.” She said. I turned and began digging through my bag, grabbing my wallet. “I got it.” Jeff said, laying his hand over mine. “Thank you.” I murmured, looking down in an attempt to hide my flushed cheeks.
She grinned at me, and winked as she mouthed ‘He’s a keeper’ to me. I smiled and nodded. She turned and closed the window once more leaving us in silence. “Thank you, I was gonna get it you know.” I said. He smiled. “No problem, my dad always told to buy a girl ice cream. He said it was the way to her heart. That is, unless she’s lactose-intolerant.” He smiled off into the distance. “That’s how they met,” he stated. I looked at him. “Who?” I asked. “My parents; my dad bought my mom an ice cream cone, and after a bunch of other crap, they fell in love.” He smiled at the sky, and then frowned. “Then they fell out of love.” He stated.
Did you hear that sound?
That was the sound of my heart breaking.
Suddenly, I did something I didn’t think I would ever do. I grabbed his hand. We stood in a comfortable silence for the next few minutes. After finishing our ice cream, he said, “C’mon.” “Where are we going?” I asked. “Just follow me.” He said. I raised my brow but followed him anyway. After walking; well more like him pulling me, through the woods, we came across a clearing.
I gasped as we came to a stop. We were at a clearing alright; we were at a cliff. A cliff that overlooked the city. Off in the distance you could see the sun setting.
Well isn’t this ironic.
Good heavens Katherine, you’re in a romance movie.
I rolled my eyes at my inner self. Though it was sort of true. I let go of Jeff’s hand, walking to the edge of the cliff. I admired the view of the city; the sun had just set, therefore making the sky a mix of red, yellow, pink, purple, and blue. I closed my eyes, letting the wind softly blow through my hair.
After a minute, I felt Jeff’s presence. “Beautiful, isn’t it?” he asked. “Yeah,” I breathed. I opened my eyes, looking over at Jeff.
He slowly sat down, dangling his legs off the edge; I sat down with him. We stayed like that for a couple of minutes; just sitting there, in silence.
Silence.
Though it wasn’t uncomfortable; we were just lost in thought. I watched as the sky started getting darker, and the city lights began getting brighter. It truly was beautiful. “How’d you find this place?” I asked him. “Hm?” he snapped out of thought. I chuckled; he looked like a confused puppy. “How’d you find this place?” I asked again. “I found this place when I was wandering one day.” He said. “I come here a lot; it helps me think.” He said.
I nodded. I wish I had a place like this to come and think. That would be nice. I leaned back so I was lying down. Tonight would be good for star gazing; and that’s exactly what I planned to do. I looked at the stars, making shapes with my eyes; like I used to when I was a kid. I felt Jeff lay down next to me. “That one looks like a butterfly.” I murmured. He chuckled, “That one looks like Chase.” He stated. I burst out laughing, it really did. Once my laughing calmed, I said “Yes. Yes it seriously does.” Then it was quiet again. After a little while, I began dozing off. I laid my head on Jeff’s shoulder, yawning and allowing my eyes to flutter closed. It was a good thing it was warm in Cali, or I would’ve been cold.
“Goodnight Kat.” Jeff murmured, wrapping an arm around me.
“Goodnight.” I mumbled, allowing sleep to overtake me.
