Problem-Solver

Will tilted his head slightly as he studied (Y/N).

She looked so... vulnerable. She was slumped against the tree, her hair falling in its familiar disheveled pattern as she stared at her feet. Her brows were creased as she pursed her lips, clearly trying to hold back some kind of emotion.

His heart ached to see her so sad. He wished that he could lean over and give her a tight hug and tell her that everything was going to be all right. He wished he could... but he couldn't find it in him to lie to her. How could everything be alright when everything was already going to hell?

"I'm sure that you'll be able to find a way to fix it," he decided on saying instead. "You seem like a much better problem solver than me." He looked up and gave her a small smile, ignoring the sudden helplessness that threatened to swallow him. There was no doubt that she was better than him - if she were in his place, she'd know exactly what to do, how to find ways to get rid of Despair, how to help his sister.

She scoffed at that, refusing to look at him. "I highly doubt that."

You're wrong, Will thought. You're so impossibly wrong.

"It's true!" was what he ended up saying.

At the earnest tone of his voice, she finally turned to face him, a small frown on her face. Then that frown turned into a sharp, sardonic grin on her face. "As if I could be better at something than anybody. I'm one of the most useless people I know."

Will had to laugh a bit at that. "I am too. There's no way you could be less useful than me." He could see that she was trying to resist asking him for an example, so he decided to provide one. "Like when you saved my life? How was that useless?"

(Y/N) faltered a bit at that. Uncertainty swept through her face before she shook her head slightly. "You're wrong," she laughed, ignoring Will's point. It was a sad sound.

"How could I be wrong?"

She snorted and shook her head. "Never mind. It's unimportant."

He stared at her, thoroughly confused. He wanted to ask her what she had meant, but he remained quiet.

"O-okay, um..." He couldn't think of anything else to say, but he didn't want to leave her. He bit his lip as he tried to think of something they could do.

Luckily, it seemed that (Y/N) was a step ahead of him.

Jumping up, she blew out a long sigh. She glanced down at him before offering her hand to help him up. "Let's go on a walk. I'm getting bored, just sitting there."

Will blinked up at her, unable to say anything. It reminded him of how they had met - (Y/N) knocking him down, then, when he had stood up, pulling him back down again. Then... she had helped him up with the exact same expression on her face as she had now - apologetic, slightly sad.

He remembered what his sister had said that night: Do you like this girl?

At the time, he had denied it. He had said that he couldn't have fallen in love within three minutes. But now he wasn't so sure. Had he fallen in love? He wasn't going to lie, that made things a bit more complicated.

(Y/N)'s expression shifted to one of confusion. "Will? Are you coming or not?"

He roused himself from his thoughts. "Yeah, I was just..." He paused, taking her hand, again feeling nostalgia sweep through him. He remembered how he thought he'd never see her again, and now here he was, holding her hand, staring into her bright (E/C) eyes. The only difference in them was the deep aching sadness that seemed to delve deep into her eyes. It terrified him, seeing how hopeless she looked. He didn't want to lose that happy, laughing, brilliant shining star he had met on that cloudy day not so long ago.

"Will?" she prompted, clueless to his raging thoughts.

"Oh! I was just in La-La Land, I guess," he finished lamely, blushing a bright red.

Finally, he felt like he earned what he had come here to get: her smile. Not the sarcastic one from before, nor the sad, self-hating one, but that familiar, soft, brilliant, shining smile that he had come to love.

She giggled softly. "Who isn't?"

"Isn't what?" He felt stupid as soon as the words left his mouth. He wished he could just go jump off a cliff.

(Y/N) rolled her eyes playfully. "In La-La Land, duh."

"O-oh! I'm sorry, I'm stupid. It didn't occur to me that we were..." He glanced down to see he was still holding her hand. Will hoped that she hadn't noticed - holding her hand felt nice. "It didn't occur to me that we were still talking about that," he finished quietly.

She gave him a soft smile. Gently, she pulled her hands away from his and Will felt like he had just lost the human connection needed to keep him from breaking down.

He shoved his hands into his pockets, hoping that she hadn't noticed his disappointment. He didn't want to seem clingy.

"So where to?" he asked distantly, trying to keep a blush from his face.

She blew out another long breath and shrugged. "I don't know. I was thinking more of a wander around the city. Something to clear my head." She threw a glance back at something, a frown flickering over her face. Will wondered what she was looking at.

Watching her, he tried to think of any sort of place that she would enjoy. He racked his brains for any memory of what she had said that she enjoyed. However, as he tried to remember, he realized that all she had mentioned was that she enjoyed scary things and peonies. He had been the one who had dominated the conversation.

He wanted to throw himself into oncoming traffic. The fact that he had just talking about himself instead of letting her talk was Exhibit A as to why she probably didn't like him.

Looking down at his feet, he bit his lips as an idea occurred to him.

"U-um, well, I know a-a frozen yogurt place," he stammered, avoiding her gaze that he was positive was trained on him. He could feel the trace of her eyes over him and his cheeks flushed red with embarrassment. "If you want to go."

There was a moment of silence. Will brought his shoulders up to his ears as he tried to make himself smaller.

Then he heard a light laugh and felt her slip her hand into his again. Will felt the fire in his cheeks flare even hotter.

"It's a little chilly out don't you think?" she laughed.

Will felt his stomach drop and he chastised himself for suggesting such a stupid thing.

"But I'd love to go," she added, much to Will's relief. There was a giggle hidden in her voice. "Lead the way."

He briefly wondered whether or not he was dreaming the heat and weight of (Y/N)'s hand, but then his gaze drifted to her hand in his and banished all doubt he had originally had. His eyes then flicked up to meet her wide and genuinely excited eyes. She looked like she couldn't wait to spend more time with him.

He felt like he was melting under her gaze - she was just so beautiful. There was no way that he deserved to meet her. There was no way he would actually be able to stay by her side. With everything that was going on, that was just some wishful thinking. Just some stupid, irrational, unrealistic thinking.

But looking at her smile and hearing her laugh...

He wasn't going to think of that here and now. He was going to live in the moment and love every second he had with her.

And he wasn't going to let anything sabotage it.
