Everything ached. Her mouth was fuzzy and she was pretty sure that nothing would flush away the taste of blood that filled her tongue. Blood kept on leaking out of her nose and there was nothing that (Y/N) could do about it.
But she still forced herself to appear normal on the outside as she walked into the office. Still forced herself to pretend like everything was fine.
However, that definitely didn't erase the pain that wrenched through her body with each step that she took.
(Y/N) was honestly rather impressed with herself. She was somehow managed to keep the grimace from her face back when she ran into Will.
Note to self: give Leo a strict talking-to after what he pulled. I almost started coughing up blood, (Y/N) thought angrily as she stalked into the office. She had been terrified that Will was going to see the blood run from her nose. It had certainly gotten dangerously close.
She huffed out a short, frustrated breath. Shoving her hands in her pockets, she breezed past everyone else in the office easily. Nobody bothered to look up as she made her way to her desk.
Although, 'desk' was a generous term. It was a bit more of an over glorified coffee table.
(Y/N) gave her head a firm shake to clear out her thoughts. Now wasn't the time to get distracted by her working conditions. No, she needed to figure out what to do about Will. And Leo. She really needed to tell Leo to mind his own business.
"Aw, you didn't bring food back," a familiar voice complained. There was a note of repressed humor tripping through the words.
Speak of the devil.
(Y/N) glanced up at Leo tiredly. He was leaning over the coffee table, frowning at one of (Y/N)'s doodles. She yanked it back and flipped it over.
Grumpily, she said, "As if you don't know why you sent me out. Jeez, you and White really want this thing to work." I mean, I do too, but that doesn't count. I don't count.
Leo smiled sheepishly. "I take it you two ran into each other?"
"No, really?" (Y/N) drawled sarcastically. "How did you know?"
The messy-haired boy flushed and rubbed the back of his neck. "Yeah, sorry that I didn't tell you about that."
She leveled him with a glare.
"Hey! Don't look at me like that! You've been way out of it for the past week - which, White has informed me, was around the same time Black started acting weird. Plus, she said that you two ran into each other around then?" Leo flashed her a questioning look, suddenly uncertain. "You were at the hospital, right? I saw you running from there. Then that means - oh."
(Y/N) pursed her lips and gave him a cool look. "Yeah. Oh." She sighed, rubbing her forehead in frustration. "A week is a fairly normal amount of time for someone to be acting weird, Leo. I'm flattered by the fact that you were worried about me, but really?"
She glanced up to see Leo looking properly ashamed. "I'm sorry, (Y/N)."
Shaking her head slightly, (Y/N) finally offered him a small smile. "It's okay, Leo. You didn't mean for it to bring back those memories. You really just wanted to help."
He relaxed almost imperceptibly. Uneasiness flashed through her at the sight. He shouldn't be relieved. Not when she was already coughing up blood.
You need to tell him. He already knows - he needs to know about this.
(Y/N) shifted awkwardly. "That being said -" Leo paled at her words, the tension back in his shoulders - "I, um... kinda need a little bit of a warning before I meet up with someone. You know. The... whole disease-or-whatever-bullcrap sort of thing." She indicated her face, where yet another nosebleed was beginning to seep from her nose. She swore under her breath and scrambled for a tissue.
Once she had pressed one to her nose, she finally looked up into Leo's eyes. The expression there made her thoughts stutter for the first time since returning to the office.
He didn't look quite surprised. A horrified sadness danced in his face.
"I... it didn't look like it would happen this fast," Leo finally whispered in shock. "I thought you would have more time." He trailed off, a troubled expression on his face.
(Y/N) blinked in surprise. "Didn't look like... wha- huh?" She gave him a look that hopefully conveyed precisely how confused she was. "I beg your pardon?"
Leo startled at her voice. "N-nothing. It's fine." He flinched. "Well, it's not fine - you're, uh... well, dying, but don't worry about it."
"Wow," (Y/N) commented dryly. "You've fixed everything - now I won't worry about the fact that I'm apparently dying faster than I'm supposed to be." She flashed him a thumbs-up. "Got it! Thanks, pal!"
Rubbing the back of his neck, Leo grimaced. "I mean, don't worry more than you have to." A confused look flashed over his face then. "Wait - why can't you go get a check-up at the hospital or something? That would help, right?"
(Y/N) dropped her eyes to the table, once more searching for a new tissue. The one she was holding to her nose was already soaked through with her blood.
Fantastic.
"I would love to," she muttered as she switched out her tissues. "However... however..." She trailed off, frowning at her arm. Hells, there was blood there. Which meant...
Crap.
That meant that Will saw it. He wasn't that stupid. (Y/N) worried at her lip, her teeth easily ripping through her skin for the upteenth time that week. She hoped he ignored it... right?
Leo snapped in front of her eyes, pulling her back to the present. "'However' what?"
(Y/N) shuffled through some random scraps of paper on her 'desk' nervously. "I've already gone to the hospital. I collapsed sometime last week. And..." She shrugged. "Well, it didn't help. I don't think anybody really knows how to deal with this, much less fix it." She avoided Leo's gaze as she paused on a piece of paperwork that she had forgotten to do.
I hope Klaus is okay with this being late, she thought distantly. Or okay with me never doing it. Because I'm not likely to. Ever.
Leo hissed out a long, uncomfortable breath. "I'm sorry, (Y/N)," he said quietly.
(Y/N) shrugged. "It's cool. It's life."
They both fell into an uneasy silence. (Y/N) continued to leaf through the papers - hells, I never do my paperwork, do I? - as Leo scuffed his toe against the ground.
Her phone buzzed in her pocket, distracting her away from her frantic shuffling of papers. (Y/N) pulled it out with vague surprise.
Will: I just attacked myself with chocolate milk. What's up with you?
She broke the silence with a soft laugh. Leo startled at the sound of her voice.
Giving her a curious look, he asked, "What?"
"I finally got his phone number."
