Nessa blinked, her gold eyes wide, apparently shocked at the sight of her younger sister. "What am I doing..." She trailed off, still staring at (Y/N). Her brows furrowed as an angry expression crossed her face. "Were you eavesdropping on us?"
The girl pushed herself back up to her feet instead of answering her sister. She didn't want to admit that she was, in fact, eavesdropping. Nessa would be furious and she already looked like she was one wrong statement away from blowing up. It wouldn't be smart to tell her the truth.
"No, I wasn't," she lied, shifting into a defensive stance.
Steven stared at (Y/N) in slight shock. "How much did you hear?" he finally asked, a slightly embarrassed tone in his voice.
"Are you kidding me, (Y/N)?" Nessa exclaimed, her hands now on her hips. She and Steven obviously didn't believe her. "Why are you even... ugh!" She threw her hands in the air, turning to Steven. "You didn't tell me she was here! I wouldn't have come!" Her voice dropped lower as she leaned closer to him, as she continued, saying, "I shouldn't be here, anyway. They're going to be furious." It was barely audible, clearly a secret between the two of them. Nessa looked nervous.
(Y/N) tilted her head as she watched the two of them in slight confusion. Why was she so scared? Who was going to be mad?
Steven glanced over at (Y/N), his frown deepening. He simply waved away Nessa's worry, instead facing (Y/N). "Shouldn't you be doing your paperwork?" he chastised.
"Finished it," she shot back, despite the fact that it was a complete and blatant lie.
The expression on Steven's face confirmed what the two of them were thinking - that there was no possible way she could've finished it that fast.
"Really?" He sounded unamused.
She shifted slightly under his stare. "I, uh... y-yes. I did." She was beginning to break. She never could maintain a lie for very long.
"Lie," he sighed. He had taken to calling her out whenever she told a lie, ever since the demon attack, when she had met Will. It was slightly funny at best, downright annoying at worst. So, of course, Steven continued to do it.
(Y/N) glared at him under angrily furrowed eyebrows. She didn't want to hear his condescending tone right now.
In a softer voice, he continued, saying, "You need to do it, (Y/N). Klaus isn't going to let it slide - he's worried that this job is interfering with your health."
That caught Nessa's attention.
She gently pushed the scarred man out of the way as she stared at (Y/N) with quiet worry and rage. "This has happened before?"
Realization swept through her as she looked into Nessa's face.
Whipping around to face Steven, she exclaimed, "You told her about that?" Fury filled her voice. "That was what you were talking about?"
He took a small step back, startled by the ferocity of her voice. "W-well, yeah!" he spluttered. "Of course I did! She's your sister!"
"I didn't want her to know anything!" (Y/N) screamed back, feeling her cheeks beginning to glow red as fury swept through her. She could see black edging in on her vision like a deadly prophecy, and yet, she ignored it. "I don't want her to ever speak with me again!"
Her older sister made a strangled noise at that, reminding both (Y/N) and Steven of her presence.
The two of them whipped back around to face her. Steven had regret written on every plane of his face and (Y/N) felt a slight flicker of guilt at the pale, heartbroken expression on Nessa's face.
