Craving quiet solitude

Head to the nature preserve

State parks are a treasure

Speed limit 25

No one here on a chilly rainy Thursday

No one pushing

No expectations

Driving 10 miles per hour

Listening to the wind and

Sounds of many birds

As they flitter about

With important tasks

Spring rain created lush

Greenery and leaves are a

Juicy emerald against

The gray sky

I spot something white

In the distance

Stark contrast to the

Flora surrounding the space

An egret, long neck elegantly

Poised in the high grasses

Awaiting some food possibly

I stop and observe

This glorious bird in her

Natural habitat

She has no clue

She is on the Threatened list

Today she is safe in the refuge

I send her silent blessings

For a long life so others can

Enjoy her species for many years

As if on cue wings unfold

Neck curls into a bend

And egret takes flight

Thin legs creating

An arrow of black behind her

Beautiful bird in flight

Coming closer to me

Like she heard my wish

For a better view

Ever so gently landing

Stretching her neck out

Standing at attention for a few pictures

And off she flies into the

Distant prairie

A feast for my eyes

On my solo journey
