I open my eyes, drawn to a strong and intoxicating scent at my right.
I see Maddox, asleep with his face towards me, mouth slightly open and holding my hand as if afraid I'll disappear.
Has he always smelled like this?
I look around, I'm in a hospital room. I note that everything looks sharper and aside from the lovely scent my mate has, it smells so.. sterile. I hear all the sounds outside the room. I feel stronger yet a little sore.
Mate.
Mate! Maddox!
"Dadda?" I nudge him a bit by twitching the hand he's holding. He starts to wake up.
"Dadda?" I repeat with a smile.
He wakes up and upon realizing I'm awake, his face beams with a smile.
"Ascher! Thank Goddess, you're finally awake!!" He envelopes me in a hug and I sniff him in. Scent. He smells so good. I hug him back, very tightly.
He lets me go but not all the way and I'm thankful for all the contact. "How do you feel?"
"I feel really good, actually. What happened?" He quickly frowns a little, perhaps at the memory.
"Your wolf is back. You shifted. You've been in a coma for more than a week. I was terrified." I sense his sadness and the need to comfort him overcomes me.
"I'm here now, don't worry." I smile at him and he smiles back.
After admiring his face for a bit, I ask. "Is this how you always see me?"
"How?"
"Like I love looking at you and having you next to me makes me feel too happy." He smiles, more like grins.
"Yes. I'm glad you finally feel the mate bond." He smiles and I hug him.
"I feel so drawn to you, Maddox." I release him from my hug and kiss him.
Really kiss him.
More than that first kiss.
"Whoa- Sorry Alpha." We're interrupted by a woman, perhaps about Maddox's age. Maddox can't keep a smile off his face as he dismisses her with an "it's okay, Dr. Steele."
"Just came in to check because Luna's heart rate over there was going too fast." My eyes almost pop out my face from a mix of shock and embarrassment. Luna.
I look to Maddox. "Well, um. She's more than okay, Dr. Can I take her home?"
"Of course, Alpha. Just after a few tests to make sure everything's okay." She smiles and leaves.
I look away from Maddox, still slightly shy from what Dr. Steele said.
"Don't be shy, my mate. You're perfect." I blush.
"You're perfect, too." I reply, smiling, eyes staring straight into Maddox's, fearless.
As if this caught him by surprise, he says "Loving the new attitude, little one."
And he comes in to continue what was interrupted.
The tests are done and I'm better than before. Dr. Steele says it might take a day or two to adjust to my wolf's presence. Maddox kept a tight grip on my hand the entire time, as if he couldn't wait to just get me out of there.
When we were good to go, he carried me bridal-style almost too quickly, my heart fell.
We're now inside his house. He ran. At wolf speed.
"Whoa."
"You can do it too." As he puts me down. I smile, happy at the thought.
"I'm hungry." He chuckles.
"Of course you are. What do-"
"I want a big steak." He makes the delightfully impressed 'mmm' face.
"Okay, princess. Give Dadda a kiss first." I smile warmly at him and tiptoe to give him a quick kiss.
We're eating steaks and potatoes in the garden because the feel of grass and air is amazing. I feel everything more now and I sense things better.
"Are you enjoying your new wolf senses, little mate?"
"Very. Has it always been like this for you?"
"It's never been anything else."
"..I feel so strong and powerful. Is this why neither packs suppress our wolf genes?"
He frowns. "Yes. To keep you compliant and weak. But don't worry, we'll save that for another day." he dismisses the topic.
"I want to save people from my old pack." He looks at me and I feel his hesitation.
"We don't associate with neither packs because it will cause unnecessary chaos."
"But that's where I'm from, Maddox. Surely it must mean something."
"Okay, we'll talk about it another time. For today, let's just enjoy each other."
I smile. "Gladly."
We're in bed, being cuddly.
I sit up and he follows suit. He arranges us so that I'm sat in between his legs.
"Ascher, do you want to join the pack?" I look at him, confused.
"Um, I thought I was already part of the pack?"
"No, not officially. But your new wolf will feel the need to be part of a pack else she will feel like a rogue and you're definitely not a rogue."
"Oh.." He smiles, encouragingly. "We'll hold an official ceremony, welcoming you to the pack and if you're ready, it can also be your Luna ceremony."
"Ohh." Happily excited yet aware of the responsibilities of having to be a Luna.
"Do I have to do something to 'officially' be your mate?" He blushes.
"Well.." He smiles, looking down.
"I'll mark you and we'll.. mate." Mate?
"Mark and mate?" I ask, curiously.
"Yes, Ascher. But no more questions!" He laughs.
"Okay.. You smell like spearmint and the oceans."
"And you, my little one, smell like cinnammon and peaches."
"Oooooh, really?"
"Yes, really." He smiles leaning in for a kiss.
We spend the rest of the night just appreciating each other. We went out to the roofdeck to appreciate the stars and the moon. I feel a connection to the moon that I haven't felt before. Having a wolf makes everything feel stronger.
"Maddox?"
"Yes, Ascher?" He looks at me, admiringly.
"I love you." His eyes grow a little larger and he grins.
"I love you too, my little one."
More kisses and cuddles.
Good night.
