**Scarlet’s P.O.V.**
“Young man, are you going to take any food?” a lunch lady asked Lukas as we were in line in the cafeteria. He happened to be in front of me, but it seemed he had zoned out, it didn’t even seem like he noticed he was being talked to.
I shook his shoulder slightly, “Lukas.” He jumped and something I couldn’t catch flashed through his eyes and he stared at me. I raised an eyebrow and motioned my head towards the food on the counter and the lunch lady waiting patiently. “You gonna’ order something?”
He blinked a few times and started grabbing things, “Sorry, I was thinking.”
I shrugged and we started moving down the line, “It happens. I know I zone out a lot,” I said with a slight giggle.
He smiled slightly as we were waiting to pay, “Where are your friends? Aren’t you normally with them?”
“Trinity doesn’t want to buy lunch today and Alice had to go to the library.”
“Are they your only friends?” he asked as he handed money over to the cashier.
I scowled slightly, which he noticed and started back tracking, “It’s not like it’s a bad thing, I was just wondering.”
I rolled my eyes and handed over my money, “I do have other friends but I hang out with them the most.”
“You don’t want to kill each other after spending so much time together?” he chuckled as we started walking to the tables.
I laughed a little, “Nah not really.”
“Well my friends really like you so you can chill with us whenever you want,” he said with a wink and then walked over to his table.
“Alright then,” I muttered under my breath; he was a very strange person.
After a few minutes of sitting at my table with Trinity talking about some things Alice showed up and slammed a text book down on the table.
I raised an eyebrow, “What’s up?”
“I’ve heard rumors, Scarlet,” she gave me a cold stare as she sat down in front of me.
“And they would be?” I asked, taking a sip of my water unconcerned.
“You and Deevy have gotten pretty friendly,” she said ominously.
I sighed at her tone, “What do you have against Lukas? This is starting to get ridiculous.”
Trinity nodded, furrowing her eyebrows at Alice, “How can you be so judgmental over someone you hardly know?”
Alice whipped her head to look at Trinity, “I’ve heard enough!”
“Please, can you really believe half of the things that are said around here?” I scoffed.
“Scarlet, I don’t think you should hang out with him.”
“Why can’t you accept him?”
“Why do you accept him?”
I raised an eyebrow, “I’m an accepting person.”
She shook her head, “Don’t think I haven’t noticed. You’ve always looked at him longer than a normal person would. And I think you’ve forgotten the time you told us you felt weird tension between the two of you.”
I remained silent, staring at her.
“He’s bad news, Scarlet.”
My eyebrow twitched, “And who are you to judge that?”
“From what I’ve heard-“
“That doesn’t mean jack shit and you know it,” I snapped.
“Guys, calm down,” Trinity said, looking between the two of us with a worried expression.
Alice pinched the bridge of her nose, “Scarlet, why do you think of him so kindly?”
My mind flashed back to that still uncovered memory of the alley way. I bit my lip, “I can’t tell you Alice.”
She looked at me with a confused expression. But I could feel myself breaking. No, no. Not here with all these people. I took a gulp of air and quickly stood up and sped walked out of the loud cafeteria.
My breathing was picking up as images started flashing through my mind. At least I made it to the empty hallway. But the images were suffocating and I slid down the wall, my knees pulled up to my chest, trying to fight back against the repressed memories. I choked on my own breath and tried not to let anything come through.
But of course, that never works.
“Where do you think you’re going?”
“P-Please…”
I pressed my hands against the sides of my head, “Stop it.” I squeezed my eyes tight and was suddenly transported to that alley way.
The boy gently grabbed my elbow and pulled me up. I was shaking but he managed to keep me steady.
“Where are your wounds?” he asked as he started pulling me down the empty street.
“I… don’t k-know.”
He sighed a little but kept walking with his hand firmly grasped on my elbow.
“Where are you taking me?”
“…Somewhere safe.”
“Scarlet?”
My head shot up as I was brought out from the memory. Lukas and Trinity were standing in front of me looking worried and confused. I tried to even my breathing but it seemed it was impossible to grasp reality.
Lukas held his hand out to me; I took it and felt a strange jolt but still managed to stand up. When I was leaning against the wall and was sure I wasn’t going to fall I let my hand drop.
“Scarlet, what’s going on? Why were you freaking out?” Trinity asked me.
“I...um…” What do I say? Wait, why is Lukas here?
Seeming to read my thoughts Trinity glanced at Lukas, “Apparently he was coming over to ask us something when you got up and fled. I yelled at Alice and then we came to see what was up.”
Lukas shrugged with a cheeky grin, “I wanted to see if you finished the math homework from the other day.”
I shook my head and ran a hand across my forehead, “Sorry. I, um, don’t like fighting with Alice…”
Trinity raised an eyebrow, “Scarlet. You looked like you were about to cry and were murmuring strange things.”
“What was I saying?”
She shrugged, “It was hard to understand. Lukas, were you able to hear her?”
Lukas looked at me for a moment then shook his head.
“I’m just not sleeping that well. No need to worry,” I tried to cover things up with a fake laugh. “And no Lukas, you can’t copy my math homework.”
