Jona continued to sleep in my arms for the next hour. It was still pouring outside, and our parents were still arguing. I just keep reliving the moment when I punched that bastard square in the nose, though. It made me feel better, and I think I was justified in that.

Suddenly, there were loud footsteps heard coming towards the door. The handle jiggled for a moment, and then mom was tossed into the room, with the door quickly locked behind her again. She looked really annoyed, but quickly wiped it off her face, replacing it with a smile and climbing onto the bed, Jona in between us.

All of the noise caused Jona to wake up. He wiped at his eyes and then smiled softly when he saw mom lying next to him. “Hi mommy.”

“Hi baby,” she replied, brushing his hair out of his face. Then Jona looked at me and I swear I saw his heart break, as his eyes started to water and he latched his arms around me again. I exchanged a knowing look with mom.

“Ssh Jona. It’s okay,” I mumbled quietly. He shook his head in response, and then turned to look at mom.

“Will you tell me what’s going on?”

Mom gave him a sad smile and brushed stray tears away from his face, “I’m sorry honey. I can’t tell you much. But you know you should never hurt anyone, right?”

Jona nodded, “Of course. Then why did daddy-“

Mom cut him off by putting her finger to his mouth in a shushing motion, “Don’t worry about it baby.” Jona let out a huff and settled himself in between us.

I sighed, but decided to try to make the best out of this, “Jona, want to play a game? Do you have any games in here?”

Jona’s face brightened a bit and he sat up, “I have Uno.”

“Well let’s play Uno,” mom said in a happier voice. Jona nodded, jumped off the bed, and started rummaging through a drawer in his desk. A moment later he pulled out a deck of Uno cards and we commenced to play a few games. It was actually pretty fun and for a moment I forgot about the messed up situation I was in.

“Uno!” Jona giggled happily, during our fourth game.

I chuckled and ruffled his hair, “You sure are good at this game, squirt.” Jona stuck his tongue out at me in response. I was about to put down my card when I heard the sound of a few of Bill’s goons clambering into the house.

Quickly, I jumped off the bed, grabbed Jona’s desk chair, and positioned it against the door in hopes to keep the creeps out. I was not having more shitty things happen today. Especially when Jona’s here.

Then I sat back on the bed and place my card down like nothing had happened. Jona raised an eyebrow at me but thankfully dropped it. I met mom’s eyes though, and I kind of wished I didn’t. She looked so sad.

Suddenly, mom dropped her cards and pulled both Jona and I into her arms.

“Oh my boys. I love both of you so much. Please don’t ever forget it. You’re both so strong and I know that you’re destined for great things,” she said in a clear voice, with a hint of emotion seeping through. Her voice made it sound like she was going to cry. I had to restrain myself from laughing with some of the things she said though. Honestly, I’m destined for great things? Yeah, sure. Let’s go with that.

“I love you, too,” Jona and I said at the same time. Mom smiled at us like we were the best children in the whole world and then kissed both of us on our foreheads.

We continued to play board games and tell stories to Jona for a few hours while Bill and his goons were doing whatever it was in the house. But I did notice that I hadn’t heard them in about twenty minutes.
