Connor Murphy walk into high school expecting nothing to be different than the day before. He would walk to English, get tripped on the way, would pick up his bag before glaring and continuing. It was a ritual of sorts, and it normally went uninterrupted.
He walked into class and took his seat in the back. The teacher wasn't in yet, so he just sat and picked at his black nail polish. After a good six minutes, Mrs. Nee walked into class. Connor didn't look up, as he didn't need to. She always looked the same in her knee length skirts and colorful blouses.
"Good morning class." Mrs. Nee said as she plopped her books on the desk.
"Good morning Mrs. Nee" the class drones. Mrs. Nee smiles an grins tiredly, and makes an announcement.
"Everyone, we have a new student. Please give your full attention to him." That woke them up. The class started mumbling to each other. Connor still didn't look up, not even when the door creaked open and a boy stepped in. He walked up to the front of the class and waited. Another boy walked in and took a seat in the empty chair in front of the boy. The first boy raised his hands and started flailing his hands around. When Connor realized this, he looked up.
The second boy stared talking. No wait. . . He was interpreting. The other boy wasn't flailing his hands around, he was talking in ASL. "Hi! My name is Evan Hansen. I moved here from Washington state with my mom, and I am deaf."
Connor understood every word of it. He had learned to sign when he was a child. His grandfather was deaf and they learned to communicate. He hadn't practiced in years. Only once in a while when he was bored by himself, but by god this kid was fucking adorable. Evan, he said his name was. It suited him. He started signing again this time to the other boy.
Oh. Connor recognized him now. It was Jared fucking Kleinman.
Evan started to sign again, asking where he should sit. Jared signed back before turning to the teacher and saying. "He wants to know where he can sit."
"Oh!" the teacher snapped out of her daze and lead Evan over to a seat near the back. The seat right beside him. Evan turned to Jared and signed "I'll see you at lunch, okay?"
Jared said "are you sure? I can stay if you need me to?"
"I'm good! Stop worrying." Evan moved forward and gave Jared a tight hug. Jared hugged back immediately. It only lasted a few seconds but Connors blood was boiling. Jared left and Evan took his seat.
A few seconds later he pulled out a notebook and wrote a little in it. He passed the notebook to Connor. He was surprised to say the least. In the notebook was small messy scrawl that clearly read, "Hi there! I'm Evan Hansen."
