Heidi couldn't remember the last time she saw her soon look so content. He had always been on edge, even though he tried to hide that she always knew. Evan was her son after all. Connor had been a gift to their family- she was sure of that. But, what would it mean for Evan in the future?

Heidi raked her hands through her messy hair and sighed. She knew she should just be grateful for him and for how he was helping Evan but she couldn't help but worry for her baby boy. Nothing was wrong with Connor, he was perfect. But Evan... he would be devastated when they broke up. Heidi paused in her thoughts. He would be devastated...if they broke up. She had no way of knowing how strong this boys feelings were for her son, but by the way he looked at him and they way he held his hand as they were asleep on the couch Heidi knew that this wasn't an everyday thing.

Ever since Evan was younger he always leaned more towards males. Heidi had seen it from the moment he entered Kindergarten and it had ben confirmed on his 5th birthday.

They had thrown a small party that consisted of her, Evan, and a few of his school friend. Evan wasn't in touch with those kids anymore, but Heidi remembered most of their parents. They were kind for the most part, but it was hard for Evan to communicate with them. There was one boy that Evan liked to hang around more than anyone else. His name had been Daniel Yu, and he was the only kid Evan had ever met other then Jared that knew ASL. His father was deaf so he had grew up signing.

Evan thought of him as probable his best friend at the time, but Heidi remembered when she realize it was more. Her son had come home from school with a grin on his face, and she of course had asked why. Apparently in his class they ad begun making valentines, and Evan had chosen Daniel to write his to.

The Valentine consisted of a big uneven pink heart with "Daniel" written across the front. On the back, there was writing. Heidi couldn't make out what it said so Evan had read it to her, declaring that it said "I loooooooooooooooove you." The Os were all looped together to look like one big slinky. Heidi had only looked at Evan before bending down and wrapping him in a big hug.

"you want to know who I looooooove?" She had whispered it into his ear as he giggled.

"Yes mommy." he said with as much serious he could muster with the puppy dog smile on his face.

"I loooooooove you!" and then she had attacked him with tickles.

The memory was a nice one to look back on, but Heidi wished she had warned Evan right then and there. should have told him how the world was not like his mommy, and that he could love whoever he wanted to, but some people didn't realize that. She didn't though. He was only four! no one should be told that ever, and much less at the age of four.

Her innocent baby didn't stay much longer after that, as his birthday came. Daniel was one of the first people to arrive, and Evan had given him a large bear hug, which Daniel had stepped out of. As soon as she had seen that motion Heidi had suspected what was going on. Evan had given him the letter only days before. Evan hadn't had much time to speak to him as they needed to be in the hospital for his grandfather. She had met his dad before, and he was an incredible religious man who worked in one of the near by churches as a Pastor. She should have known that his son would not enjoy being given a love letter by a boy.

The birthday party went on, and Evan had the time of his life, not seeming to realize the way his best friend was treating him. It was all going smoothly until the time to open presents came along. Heidi had given Evan the My Little Pony complete set. Evan had hugged his mom tightly and thanked her a ton. Jared gave Evan a shirt that said "My superpower is A S L (finger spelled) what's your superpower?" and Evan loved it. He wasn't the best at reading yet, but he knew the finger spelled words on the front. Daniels present was the last that was open that day. It was an action figure doll of Captain America. Evan had been very excited to play with his doll, but Heidi remembered telling Evan to thank his friend first. Evan then made the mistake that lost his friendship with the boy. He had leaned over and kissed him on the cheek.

Daniel had stood up and shock and rubbed a hand over his cheek. "You cant do that! My daddy says you cant kiss another boy!" He had yelled those words at Evan with a look of disgust on his face. Evan had been very confused, and answered

"My mommy said that I can kiss whoever I want to." And that was true, she had said that to her son. But not all parents say things like that to their children.

"Your mommy is wrong." Daniel said. "My daddy say that you are a sinner, and that I cant talk to you." Evan had started to cry then, saying over and over again

"you are wrong! you are wrong, you are wrong, you are wrong!" And it had broken Heidi's heart.

Daniel called his father, who quickly rushed to pick his son up. Everyone left the party soon after that, and Evan had sat in Heidi's lap crying the rest of the day. It had been Evans first heartbreak, and she still blamed herself for it. The world was not as accepting as she thought, and although she knew her son could love whoever he wanted some people had yet to realize that.

Evan had never told Heidi that he liked anyone after that. He probably didn't even remember Daniel in the first place, but she did and she would never let something like that happen to her son ever again. He never dated anyone in Elementry school, or middle school. He never came home gushing about some boy or girl he liked, he never mentioned it. He never mentioned it until Connor.

Maybe Evan had never said Specifically to his mom that there was a boy that he liked, but she knew. Heidi knew from the way his eyes lit up when he talked about him and how he only ever seemed to talk about him. That gave her hope that maybe there was someone out there for her son.

She would always be worried for Evan's heart, but that was apart of having a kid. She loved him, and knew that maybe Connor loved him too. Not in the same way, but in a way the she could trust. Connor would do good for her son.

Heidi pulled a blanket off of the chair beside the couch and pulled it over the two boys with as much love as she could muster. They only sighed and continued sleeping. It had been a long day for all of them, and a nap sounded nice.
