John had slept at Pauls desk, reluctant to go home for some reason. It wasn't very comfortable but it was alright for the night. The first one in the office was surprisingly not Brian but a devastatingly morning person, Pattie. She walked in with her head tipped back and a travel mug of tea pointed to the ceiling. Finally bringing it down, she found John curled up in Pauls old chair. She set her cup down and came around the desk to lean down next to Johns ear. "John!" She yelled.
John was forced awake and nearly fell off the chair. "Fuck off Pattie!" He scowled and slunk back into the seat but this time he was more awake and aware. Pattie chuckled as she went back to the other side again, leaning her body forward on the desk. She gave John her most questioning of looks before he sighed and sat up straighter, pulling himself together. "What do you do when, someone tells you that they love you-?"
"Most people would say it back." Pattie interrupted cheekily and John just scowled again. "Ok ok. Continue." She waved her hand as if to give him permission to speak.
"And they were like half asleep so you don't really know if they meant to say it or if you're supposed to say it back?" John went, embarrassed. Pattie however had a growing grin on her face.
"It was Paul wasn't it? And before you get angry love, just about everyone in the office knows about the two of you since that whole performance we got here not that long ago. Breaking up with Yoko and then taking Paul out alone...remember?" She chuckled and John was anything but amused.
"Alright, anyway. I would just wait and see if Paul brings it up. Do you want to say it back?" She asked out of her own curiosity. John didn't seem to want to answer her. "Ok well, I've got work and you should probably go home, freshen up and come back then,huh?" She pointed to her desk as she turned and walked off. John stood and walked out of the office. He frustratingly rubbed at his temple as pain throbbed through. Part of him was suggesting that he go back to Pauls but he quickly pushed that idea far into one of the many corners of his mind and drove himself home. He was quick to brew himself some tea as he changed for work. And just as he grabbed his keys to head out, he stopped. The sound of Pauls drowsy voice replayed in his brain.
'I love you John'
He swallowed thickly and tried to remember what Pattie had previously advised him to do. He unknowingly started to clench his fist too hard, creating small crescents in his palm. The light outside hit his blinds, skinny lines of light poured over him. A specific key on his ring caught his eye and made him laugh. The laugh was bitter and sarcastic rather then joyful in the slightest. He was laughing at the backwards shit that he and Paul had pulled. He'd been given a key to Pauls place before they'd even said I love you. John rolled his eyes so hard and brought his mug to his mouth. Pattie had been so curious as to whether John was going to say it back but it wasn't like he knew the answer to her curiosity. Of course he'd been dancing around it since he was what? 16? 17?
John shook his head again and swished the tea around in his mouth until it went cold, he swallowed it. There was always something about Paul that made John more sensitive then he'd liked to be. He'd fucked up somewhere along the way and got attached to him in a way that he was sure that Paul had never appreciated. But there were always moments where John was sure Paul had done the same with him.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~"Yer da gonna let you bring all the fun stuff with ya?" John asked, leaning his chest against the trolley. Paul was barely alive as he strolled next to him. He'd paled considerably, his eyes we're droopy and unfocused as he tried to maintain pace with John, who he swore was just getting faster and faster.
"What are you on about?" Paul asked softly with a hoarse voice and John chuckled. Paul had rung him up some thirty minutes ago, his tone agonizingly sick as he asked John to come with him to the shops to get himself some medication. He'd been rather mute since the phone call.
