Exactly as the Dark Lord arranged, I arrived at Malfoy Manor roughly half an hour before he was going to – just to smooth everything over, to inform the girl…
Lucius and Narcissa were collected by the grand front doors to greet me upon my arrival; but their smiles were both a little too wide.
She was pressing herself into him, her hand laid delicately upon his chest, whilst Lucius’ arm was protectively stretched around her waist.
I cocked my head at them both, wondering if my own husband had ever displayed such a display of affection. I wracked my memory but found nothing.
But then again, I considered, my reasons for marrying Rodolphus Lestrange had never stretched further than out of convenience. We had both shared pure blood and a strong loyalty to the Dark Lord, but there the similarities stopped.
I’d never loved my husband, of course. For as long as I can recall I’ve only ever looked at one man. And now I’m about to visit his daughter.
Admittedly, when the Dark Lord had mentioned all those years ago that he needed to find a woman to provide him with a child, I’d put myself forward for the task without hesitation, and expected him to accept.
I told him with great enthusiasm about my enduring devotion to him, and how I’d dedicate the rest of my life to raising the child to be just as he was. “I’m forever loyal to you, Master,” I assured him. “And I have a great line of pureblood ancestry behind me… I am a perfect choice…”
He’d chuckled darkly. “And whatever would Rodolphus would say, Bellatrix?” he’d mused.
“My marriage would matter little when this great honor comes into consideration,” I’d replied eagerly. “My husband would understand and greatly welcome such a child – a symbol of your recognition of our eternal loyalty.”
He’d looked at me, his eyes fixed upon me, his lips stretched out into half a smile. I’d stared back at him, completely in love.
“You are so very loyal, I give you that, Bellatrix,” he’d murmured. “But no… I have other uses for you – I need someone with a little more… grace…”
He’d slid his eyes over to my wild beehive of knotty dark hair and tittered before turning away. Cheeks burning and completely heart-broken, I’d nodded and gave a faltering smile. “Of course, Master… whatever you wish…”
But even if I was not the child’s mother, I still vowed to protect her and love her as my own. I loved my Master – everything about him – and that included his daughter.
“Cissy,” I murmur, stretching out my arms as I get closer. “Lucius… we’ve done it. We’ve really done it.”
Narcissa smiles stiffly. She opens her mouth to speak but makes a strange, small choked sound. Lucius’ grip on her becomes a little tighter.
“Oh, Cissy, there’s no need to be upset,” I coo, rubbing her shoulder. “You’ve both been so brilliant. And now it’s almost over. You’ve been so brave…”
I trail off, glancing over their shoulders. “Speaking of brave – where is our little hero? Where’s my wonderful nephew got to?” I ask Narcissa.
Narcissa frowns at her hands. Lucius glances at her before seemingly taking it upon himself to speak for both of them. “He’s sitting upstairs, with the girl,” he nods curtly. “He… he decided she needed guarding up till the very last moment.”
“What a trooper,” I cackle. “The Dark Lord will be very pleased with him, I’m just sure of it… will you take me to him? To… to her?”
They exchange glances. “All right,” Lucius says finally. “It would be good for Draco to get a break from her, anyway. The poor boy is exhausted.”
