The scarlet red Hogwarts train rolls through the countryside. I watch the scenery fly past the window, hardly able to squash my excited anticipation. Once we arrive back on platform 9 and ¾ of King’s Cross Station, Draco and I are going to be met by Lucius and Narcissa, who will take us both back to Malfoy Manor. We are going home.
Pansy tried resting her head on my lap a couple of minutes ago, but I’d stiffened and scowled until she realized I was not going to stroke her hair or display any other kind of affection. She gave up a few minutes later and got up huffily, stormily claiming she was going off to the Prefect’s cabin.
I don’t know what she was expecting me to do – for me to stand up and protest, to tell her to come back, that I wanted her there? – but she knows my mind’s not in a place for girlfriends right now. Not that it ever is. Pansy knows the extent of my feelings for her – or the lack of them – but in the same way she did for Draco, she puts up with it.
That’s something I just don’t understand about girls – I don’t know why they -(especially a Slytherin like Pansy) -expect romance from someone like Draco or me. We’re Slytherins. The only love we harbor is for ourselves.
This thought in tact, I let my eyes slide suspiciously to Draco. Ever since I confronted him about the plan that would take place over the holidays, he hasn’t said a word to me. Not out of spite, just – just letting it sink in, I think.
He’s pissed at me for bailing to his parents of course, for telling them I don’t think he’s getting anywhere with Lexi. If there’s one thing Draco hates, it’s weakness. He would never admit to himself that his attempt at winning over Lexi is leading to nothing but some weird gushy relationship. If he wants to survive, he needs to help.
“We’re almost there,” I say, eyeing him testily.
Draco continues to stare out of the window, jaw clenched. “…I know,” he says finally.
“And you’re going to talk to Lexi on the platform, like we discussed before?” I continue, eyebrow raised.
Draco’s eyes flash to mine. “Get lost, Blaise. I don’t need to be told repeatedly.”
I smile triumphantly. He’s going to do this after all. He will do this. “I just have to be sure,” I say lightly. “I need to know you’re not going to drop out of this last minute.”
“What, you think I’m not capable of it?” Draco challenges.
My light-headed mood quickly slips. “Yes, that’s exactly what I think,” I retort.
Draco is silenced, but he clenches his jaw tighter. His eyes return to the scenery chasing past us, through the window.
“This was my mission, Blaise, and I will complete it,” he says after a while, not turning to meet my eye. “But it was never any of your bloody business.”
“You weren’t doing anything about it,” I reply matter-of-factly. “I had to step in before you start endangering other people’s lives. You haven’t done anything except skip around Lexi in lovesick circles all term. Without my help you’d be nowhere.”
“Maybe it’s better like that,” Draco snarls. “We’re moving too quickly; the whole thing might fall through. We need to wait until we know her of her feelings for me, for definite. If we play this how I want to play it, we have more chance of succeeding.”
“And your parents being killed,” I blurt angrily. “…And you, of course,” I add, somewhat lamely. “…Look, you know how impatient he can be. He won’t want to be kept waiting and it could kill you, Draco.”
“He told me I had to the end of the year,” Draco shakes his head firmly, as if he actually believes him.
“He could very easily change his mind! Your family’s already in a pretty bad place with him, that’s why he made you do this in the first place. One more failure, and… you could be murdered before the end of the year, Draco. This might be your last ever train journey to Hogwarts.”
Draco isn’t looking out of the window anymore.
He stares at me, mouth slightly open. His eyebrows furrow into a small frown of understanding. Something inside me sings in euphoria as I realize I’ve got through to him. Finally, he sees sense again.
As he stares at me, a new sound comes from out in the corridor, just outside our compartment. It’s a sound I don’t really know – laughter, like the tinkling of bells. It throws me off track and I glance over my shoulder irritably to see who it might be coming from.
“Lexi,” murmurs Draco in a small voice.
I look back at him in urgent anticipation. His neck is craned, trying to see out the corridor – he turns to look back at me, and then looks back out into the corridor. I can see the look of understanding dying in his eyes.
“Draco,” I mutter urgently.
Draco takes one final look at me before getting up. “I’ll be back in a minute,” he says under his breath, and whisks out of the compartment.
