excuse all "french" used by Blaise and Malfoy
Blaise's POV
It’s said you find love in the most unexpected of places. Although I’m not a die-hard fan of the cliché, I have to admit I truly understood the meaning of this two years ago, in the summer of fourth year.
My mother has been widowed seven times. Pitying friends of the family have commented to me on what a “terrible coincidence” it is; a “horrible stroke of bad luck”. But here’s the thing -- every time another husband dies, the amount of money in our vault at Gringotts grows. Call it anything you want, just not a coincidence.
Anyhow, if you find yourself in the position of being seventeen years old and having seven deceased stepfathers in your family history, it’s not a good thing. I can barely even remember all their names. All I know about them is that they were probably rich, otherwise my mother and I wouldn’t have the family status that we do, and stupid enough to fall for my gold-digging but undeniably good-looking mother.
When your mother’s only looking for more money, you can only be a distraction. She sent me off to boarding school the day I turned six. The next time I saw her was five years later, when we bought my equipment for Hogwarts. I’ve seen her every summer since then, and almost every time she has a new husband. That’s pretty much as much as I know about her.
So two years ago, it’s fair to say I was searching for an escape. Mum was off on her “once-in-a-lifetime” honeymoon in Australia (“…not really a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ thing though, is it, seeing as you’ve done it five times before” I reminded her) with Husband No. 6.
I mentioned this to Draco. We’d just become close and he invited me to stay at his house for the first week of the holidays, when Mum was away. “Just for something for you to do,” he said. “If you need someplace to escape, the Manor’s probably the most suitable option.”
I entered the Manor for the first time two years ago and immediately felt at home.
The place was pretty huge – granted, it was no Hogwarts, but one of the biggest Manor houses I’d ever seen all the same. On the outside it was a dark, brooding castle of a house, but inside it was warm and welcoming. It was sumptuously decorated; magnificent carpets covering stone floors, high ceilings that dangled handsome chandeliers, darkly intricate tables and chairs made out of a rich brown wood, and lavish green leather settees. It was comfortable and accommodating, yet boasting of wealth and fortune. It was perfect.
Something about the regal furnishings felt so welcoming to me, and then there were the people themselves.
Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy were the type of parents I’d spent my whole childhood dreaming of. Lucius was tall, handsome, smart, and witty; he had that air of authority about him that made you want him to like you, to impress him. And then there was Narcissa; a loving and supportive wife and husband, with such grace and beauty and compassion about her. She adored Lucius and Draco with such open affection that I’d just never seen from my own mother. She ordered the house elves to give me the best guest room in the Manor and immediately made me feel at home.
I’d only planned to stay at the Manor until my mother returned from her honeymoon. I ended up remaining there the whole summer. When the new school term threatened to arrive within a week’s notice, Lucius took Draco and I to Diagon Alley and insisted on buying me all my year’s new school books, as well as a new broom.
