Leandra's POV

"She's gotten worse, Mrs Taites"

The doctor's words seemed miles away as my mom replied but I didn't bother listening.

I had been expecting this.

She'd been sick all throughout the week and even missed a day of football practice, something that she never does.

I stared at her through the glass of Dr. Stone's office. She looked completely normal sitting in the hospital corridor her blonde hair in a bun and her blue eyes scanning a magazine.

An exact replica of me.

But you could make out she was sick. Very sick. Her skin was pale and her cheekbones were scaringly prominent and her eyes lacked their usual sparkle.

She wasn't like this. She didn't deserve to be like this.

"Leah dear, do stop crying."

I zoned back in and put my hand to my cheek which I found wet.

This was normal.

I tired to fight my tears back whenever I saw her in pain or make a weird face after taking her meds or when she just seemed like herself

And I lost every single time.

"Leah it's alright," my mom's soft voice brought me back into the present.

I looked into her blue eyes, so similar to mine that were sunken into her thin face framed by her brown hair.

"Marlene will be alright."

Yeah right.

"Leandrea," said a calm voice. I looked at the lady behind the desk infront of me.

Dr. Stone

She looked like stone too with her grey eyes and grey hair.

"I understand that you and Marlene are extremely close as twins."

I nodded. Yes genius

"Well at this stage it is important that the patient is happy and is not reminded a lot about his or her...um illlness."

Illness? That was understating it.

Marlene's cancer had ruined our entire lives!  She was such a ray of sunshine, especially in her dark days.

She didn't deserve this. No teenager did.

"I hope I can trust you with this," Dr. Stone continued. "Its been a week since her last chemo therapy and the hasn't been much improvement. Can I trust you to tell me if anything in her personal life is bothering her?"

I nodded.

"Good," she said. "You can meet me next week."

She scribbled something on a sheet of paper and handed it to my mom who thanked her and stood up to leave. I got up and made my way through the door, leaving the cold hospital room behind.

"Mom, what did Stone say?"

My sister pounced on us as soon as I shut the door.

"She said that there's been a steady improvement," my mom said giving her a pat on the back and a wide smile.

I have no clue how she did that.

Marlene continued jabbering as we made our way to the parking lot talking about something on the football team and my mom nodded excitedly, occasionally adding a word or two.

I on the other hand was extremely quiet.

I was in the car before my mom barely opened the door and stared out of the window as the car backed out of the parking lot and zoomed along the empty road.

She can't go.

"Oh for heaven's sake stop crying Leah!" I heard an annoyed voice say and glanced at my scowling twin.

Great! I'd started crying again!

"I'm gonna be fine!" She shouted again.

"I wasn't crying," I mumbled. "My eyes were simply watering."

"Watering my foot," Marlene snorted rolling her eyes at me. "Cry baby!"

"What did you call me?!?!" My voice soared a couple of octaves as I grabbed one of the cushions we kept in the car and flung it at her face.

"You asshole! How dare you!"

"Mom did you hear what she called me!"

"That's cause she flung a pillow at me!"

"Girls stop!" My mom shouted and we shut up.

You do not want to meet an angry Debra Taites.

"I can't drive with 2 teenagers yelling their asses off like hyenas in the backseat."

"Mom yelling our what off?" Marlene asked innocently, wiggling her eyebrows.

I laughed as my mother's face turned red.

For a while everything seemed to go back to normal. Back to before Marlene had been diagnosed with leukemia.

There I said the word.

Leukemia.

The one thing that ruined my life.

Somebody please give this mess an award for saying that word!

"Oh my God! I can't believe it!" I heard Marlene gasp. "She's zoned out again!"

"Did not." I replied rolling my eyes.

"Dude, Caleb is really gonna stop liking  you if you start zoning out when he asks you to date him again."

"Isn't that a good thing?" I replied.

"Not for you. For him maybe." She shrugged. "He doesn't know how much trouble I take to handle you."

"Well maybe if I tell Ryden what a pain you are, he'll take another look at Chelsea!"

Marlene turned as red as the blood she sometimes coughed up.

Eww, why am I thinking of that?

My mom laughed from the drivers seat. Obviously she had been listening.

"Do you girls plan on telling me who these guys are?"

"No!" We said together, crossing our hands and scowling together.

My mom looked amused but didn't say anything and turned into our driveway.
