Leandra's POV
"Leah dear, is there something wrong with your spaghetti?"
I looked up from my plate which I'd been staring at and playing around with for sometime.
"Uh nothing mom," I lied taking a spoon full and shoving it in my month. "It's great!"
"Well you have been staring at it for half an hour," my dad grunted from the other end of the table.
"Sorry Dad I was just thinking about something," I said trying to shove as much spaghetti in my mouth as I could.
"I'm going to turn in for the night," Marlene said tossing her empty plate in the sink and making her way up the stairs. "Goodnight!"
"Don't forget to take your meds sweetie!" My mom called out.
"I'm 17 mom! Don't call me sweetie!" A voice called back.
"Goodnight," my dad mumbled to no one in particular and headed to his room.
My mom sighed and collected the empty plates and dumped them in the sink. "I hate this," she said sitting back at the dining table and putting her head in her hands.
"I know right." I dumped my finally empty plate in the sink and started to wash the rest of the dishes.
Ever since Marlene had been diagnosed it had been extremely quite at home.
Marlene mostly stayed in her room and only came down for meals. Dad was a lawyer and he'd started working late to pay for Marlene's chemo. He came back in time for dinner and then went to sleep. I too was either busy with school work or was stuck with my nose in my book and mom was the only one trying to make it cheerful with occasional help from Marlene.
"I'm going to see what movie is playing on TV," mom said. "You want to join me?"
"I have some school work to catch up on mom," I lied. I actually wanted time to myself. "Another time maybe."
I walked sluggishly up to my room and stopped outside Marlene's door and knocked. "Come in," said a voice and I entered.
"Oh it's you," she said looking up from her phone. "You know you don't need to knock Leah."
"Yeah I know," I said closing the door and sitting on the bed next to her. "I just thought I should. How are you now?"
"As fine as I can be."
"Cool."
Ughh! Why was this so awkward.
"Just don't take it seriously," she said staring at the wall ahead.
"Take what?"
"What I told you in the morning," she said still staring at the wall. "Don't take it seriously. I was not me."
