Thinking. Thinking back. Thinking back to. Thinking back to the party. Where the incident happened. Where everything went wrong. What caused Sadie to cry and what caused Reba and I to stand in Sadie's back yard early in the morning looking into her eyes now. Reba and I find seats around the yard and pull them up to the table where Sadie sits, and then there is silence. No words spoken from anyone. Eyes meeting, yet eyes not meeting. We've never had this silence. The silence that makes me want go crazy, and just want to yell.
"Our group is splitting up!"
"Carter quiet down some people are still awake, you know? And what are you talking about?" Sadie asks
"Our group, it is splitting up. The only people who are a couple and official are Zach and Jocelyn. Me and Austin haven't even gone on our first date yet. Sadie, you and Robert are on the verge of breaking up yet Robert is not going to remember any of this when he wakes up today for school. And Reba, you like two different guys--"
"Two different guys? What about Alex?" Sadie interrupts
"And nobody is going to be friends anymore after all this drama. It is probably going to be a girls vs guys battle. And our group is falling apart." I finish
"Carter, you have to realize everything is not a fairy tale. Some things don't last forever." Reba says pushing a strand of dark brown hair out of her eyes.
"Yeah, if things aren't meant to be, they're not meant to be." Sadie responds
"I just want everyone to be happy. Is that to much to ask for? It's all my fault, and I just want people to be happy and the situation to be resolved. I should of never went to the party. I should of went straight home after the hospital. I should of never Robert and never told you guys that you should go to school here."
"Carter, you realize that if you wouldn't have met Robert, you wouldn't have Austin in your life right now right? Me and Robert are probably going to argue and work things out. I don't know about Reba but things with me and Robert will be fine."
Tears start to fall from my eyes. I'm not even sure why I'm crying. Is it because of the drama? Am I tired? I don't know. I lay my head on the table, thinking. This time just thinking about everything and everyone. The future, the past, the present, relationships, my parents, the party, birthdays. Birthdays. Birthdays? Birthdays.
"Guys?" I ask
'Yeah?" They answer at the same time.
"Why did we have the party yesterday?"
"What do you mean?" Sadie asks
"Why did we have the party yesterday, when Austin's birthday is today."
