Meteor POV
I'd been sitting in the Infirmary with Comet since the meeting with The Guardians of the Galaxy had gone oh so very well. It was everyday someone wanted to hear that intergalactic terrorists had put a bounty on them and now everyone wanted them dead apparently. I love having thoughts like these at freaking 3 AM!
A squeak startled me up from the chair I had been dozing on. It was the door being pushed open by Devin, what was he doing here? I know that Comet gave him the love potion but did it work?
"Hey man, what's up?" I tried to sound nonchalant. Devin shrugged, his gaze was trained on Comet who was jacked up on pain meds. "Dude, you okay?" I tried again. Devin still didn't look at me. I sighed and sat back, just accepting that he was probably high or drunk or shit like that.
"What happened to you two?" His voice was softer then normal which was freaky. Even freakier were his words. My mind instantly went to dark places, places that caused my nightmares, places that made me break down like I had earlier, places that made me wish I was dead. I hated going to those places but people always forced me to go there.
"I don't know what you mean." I lied. I knew exactly what me meant, I just didn't want to go there.
Devin pointed at Comet's electrodes. "Who did that to her?" Then he pointed to mine. "Who did that to you?" His hand shook. "That's not natural buddy. You can try to tell me otherwise but it won't do you any good. I'm not the smartest in the bunch but I'm no moron."
My breath was slightly stilled. I hated it when people made me go to the dark places. "Mom said she would make us stronger, more powerful. She was right. Thanos and other scientists were on The Forgotten Planet so it was an easy and quick process." I paused, forcing the dark thoughts back into their cages. I had lost it earlier, I wouldn't lose it again, especially not in front of some hero kid who'd never seen a horror in his life.
I had watched my own insides be ripped out. My own sisters limbs dismembered and discarded before being replaced. I had listened to the machines for hours until I admitted that the machine was me and I was the machine. There is no horror greater than knowing that your own body is being turned into something you have no control over. Then they upped the torture and took our minds as well, leaving us with nothing but what we already knew and whether or not we chose to believe the lies they fed us. We believed them, it's not like we could live out our lives trying to see in the dark without a shed of light.
"I can't believe they would experiment on kids, their own flesh and blood." Devin mumbled. I hadn't even heard him clearly, my mind was going numb. The dark places had won again. Being away from Mom and the others made it easier to tell what parts of me were real and which were manufactured to seem real but I still wasn't clear on anything except who I could trust. Devin was not someone I could trust.
"I think you should leave." I stood up and held out my arm to push him towards the door.
Devin held up his hands defensively. "Woah man c'mon, I'm sorry if I struck a nerve but believe me when I say I would like to help."
"Your parents should have helped by killing those villains instead of dumping them unsupervised on their own planet." I scoffed. "Their inability to see the obvious is what started this, the damage is done now permanently." Devin didn't protest anymore as I pushed him out the door.
When the door clicked shut and his footsteps were echoing away and down the hall I decided to go and get something to eat, I was starving.
Devin POV
I watched Meteor leave from around the corner before dashing forward and slipping back into the room. I could tell that he didn't want to talk about the things that had been done to him and Comet on The Forgotten Planet but I wanted to help truly.
When I saw Comet's sleeping form in the bed again I felt my heart melt. She was perfect, the purest image of beauty and grace. She was like a spring of cool water on a foggy and muggy morning; refreshing, relaxing, and calming. I dragged my fingers through her hair and played with the small stars that were attached to the crown of her head. They were both softer than silk.
Not wanting to dilly dally I carefully placed my hand written invitation on her bed stand where she would see it when she woke up. Then I went to leave but paused.
My thoughts whirled, should I kiss her or not? How did one go about departing from a sleeping flawless girl that they had just asked out? Did one say some poetry and hope her subconscious heard? Did one wave like they were parting friends or just stare wistfully at her until their eyes hurt?
None of those options suited me so I just leaned over and kissed her forehead gently. She stirred slightly but didn't wake up. Then I stepped out and shut the door. It was time to return to that horrible party Bomb had insisted on having.
Meteor POV
I saw Devin leave and almost went to chastise him for going in my sisters room but thought better of it. Instead I reentered and checked that nothing wrong had happened.
All I found was a small, but formally written, note from Devin on the nightstand.
Dear Comet,
I would like to ask your company for a small meal I was planning on having out near the clearing in a few days. The clearing is a nice quaint area out back in the middle of the garden, I'm sure you'd enjoy it. If you choose to accept then please let me know.
Sincerely, DevinMeteor set the note back down. At least the love potion had worked on Devin. After Aster got over an inevitable hangover tomorrow they'd know if Bomb's had worked or not. Maybe Universal hadn't even given Aster the potion for Bomb yet, who knew. They were villains, unpredictable was their nature. Maybe alcohol would change how the potion worked, maybe not. They hadn't really tested it much, they didn't exactly have time.
Meteor sat down and tried to go back to sleep. The dark places kept interrupting his thoughts. He wished he was like Comet, he could just shut down and block out the universe. Except for whenever drugs were in her the electronics in her brain needed to be kept working when the rest of her shut down, hence her chargers. Since the drugs didn't really shut her down she didn't need to charge, did she?
Meteor racked his brain trying to think of the equation that would equal how many hours of charge Comet needed versus how much she used. After a few hours his brain hurt so much from all the thinking he could barely remember to breath. Finally his eyes slipped close and he passed out into a reckless slumber.
