***Author's Note*** Hey, thanks for chosing to read my story! I would just like to warn you I wrote this when I was 13 and finished it (the last 2 chapters) when I was 14! I feel my writing has improved since then, which is why I started my latest story (the one with the dragon cover http://www.wattpad.com/489881) nearly a year or so ago! If you like my style but feel the writing isn't very good, please read my current story instead! Thanks again! ***
The Wolf Boy
Chapter One, the Wolf Boy
Jessica Thompson ran as fast as she could, her legs ached and every part of her body screamed at her to stop. She finally reached a clearing in the woods, she panted heavily as she looked around her. After another quick look around her, she collapsed on the ground. As she lay on the ground, she wondered how this could possibly have happened. It had all started when she and her best friend, Abigail, had discovered a cave not far from her house. The cave had been the girls' own special spot. One day when Jessica's parents were out, she'd ventured off to the cave by herself. She had been crying and hadn't noticed the odd purple glow that surrounded the cave. Abigail had gone on vacation that summer, so she had no one to talk to. She was crying because her parents expected so much of her. The usual stuff, "Why can't you be more responsible." and "What is the meaning of this C, on your math test!"
Jessica Thompson was just your average 15-year-old girl. She just couldn't seem to live up to her parents' expectations, do well in school, and deal with the undeniable truth that her parents had been fighting a lot more of late. Jessica sat in the darkness of the cave and cried herself to sleep. She awoke a few hours later. Jessica scrambled to her feet and wiped her tears away and said aloud, "If only you were here Abigail, you'd know just what to do."
Right after she'd said those words, she noticed the purple glow around the cave. The purple glow seemed to get more intense, deeper into the cave. Curious, Jessica walked deeper into the small cave. She gasped as she saw a weird purple portal of some sort. She was slightly alarmed at first, and then she threw a rock from the cave's floor into the portal. It didn't come out the other side. If she had been thinking straight, she would have left the thing alone, but she was too overwhelmed with curiosity to just leave it. Next, she stuck her right arm through the portal. All of a sudden there seemed to be some sort of wind storm in the cave. Jessica screamed as she realized she was being pulled into the portal. "Somebody help!" she yelled, but no one heard her.
The next thing she knew she had fallen through the portal and had landed on a tree branch. She gasped and looked around her and saw she was in a forest of some sort. She looked down and saw the ground far below her. Great, now how am I going to get down? she thought. All of a sudden she heard a sickening snap, as the branch she was on gave way. The ground rushed up to meet her and the world went black. She awoke and glanced at her watch. With sickening realization, she remembered being sucked in the portal, and falling to the ground. She sat up and moaned, her head was throbbing uncontrollably.
"Well, you've been out for a while, how're you feeling?" asked a voice.
Jessica yelped and leapt up in surprise, she grabbed a rock off the ground and held it, ready to throw if need be. "Who's there?" she demanded.
The voice answered, "Calm down there lady, I'm not going to hurt you."
"You still haven't answered my question!" she yelled in a voice that she hoped sounded braver than she felt. All was silent for a few minutes. "Show yourself, you coward!"
"All right, all right, put the rock down." A boy who looked about her own age stepped out from behind a tree. He had the most amazing bright green eyes she'd ever seen. The boy's dark black hair covered one of his eyes, as he leaned casually against a tree. "See, I'm not going to hurt you, now drop the rock already."
Jessica dropped the rock only to pick up a sturdy looking stick that had fallen off one of the trees. The boy rolled his eyes and sighed. "I'm not putting down the stick until you explain to me where I am." Jessica answered.
The boy eyed her for a few minutes and spoke in a tired voice, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."
Jessica glared at him and swung the stick around threateningly, "Try me."
The boy just sighed and said, "Fine. You're in a secret world; it's inhabited by a few of us, and not known to the outside world."
Jessica wondered whether to laugh at him, or ask when the last time he checked if his brain was still in his head. The boy continued, "Most of us here aren't normal, like for example, I can turn into a wolf." Jessica rolled her eyes. The boy looked at her again with a tired expression on his face, "I told you that you wouldn't believe me."
Jessica smirked, "Like I'd actually believe that you can turn into a wolf." The boy rolled his eyes at this remark. "Well Mr. I'm-a-wolf, prove it then," Jessica demanded. The boy gave her an odd look. "Well, I'm waiting." Jessica tapped her foot on the ground impatiently.
"If I turn into a wolf, will you promise that you're not going to freak out on me?" The boy asked her tiredly.
Jessica just smiled "Sure, I won't freak out."
The boy sighed, and all of a sudden, and howled loudly. His body began to twitch and his hair slowly vanished, ears grew out of his head, and a long tail swished in the air. Finally, there stood the full form of a black wolf in the spot where the boy had stood. Jessica screamed and ran as fast as she could away from the wolf. Sticks snapped under her feet, and tree branches whipped her face, leaving scratches all over her. She could still remember the horrible howl of the wolf behind her. As she lay on the forest floor remembering all this, she scanned her surroundings once again, before closing her eyes slowly, and drifting off to sleep.
