Zadie Brynn Welsey (played by Maia Mitchell) is a true teenage girl. She's a fun-loving, outgoing teen with a sassy edge, and can be delightfully awkward sometimes. Despite her crazed life, she's always been the one to brighten the room and lighten a mood.
Zadie's mom, Tracy Wesley (played by Gwyneth Paltrow), is a no-nonsense, uptight figure who can come off as quite rude. She's a workaholic who's made it clear to Zadie that she never wanted kids and she was an accident. This harshness has led to a strained and difficult relationship between them.
Zadie's mom may not have wanted kids, but she had three. Zadie, the oldest; Alex (played by Bailee Madison), who's a spoiled brat accustomed to getting her way; and Wren (played by Mackenzie Ziegler), who's innocent and sweet. The tension between Zadie and her mother has contributed to a complicated sibling dynamic, with Zadie often feeling disconnected from her younger siblings.
Zadie has a complicated relationship with her mom but gets along well with her dad, Weston Wesley (played by Mark Wahlberg), who frequently moves for his U.S. Army job. When Zadie was young, the constant relocations were too much for her mother, leading to their divorce. Zadie and her two younger sisters stayed in Mission Creek, California, where Zadie formed a close bond with her best friends, Delta James and Leo Dooley.
During a visit to Mission Creek, Weston met Jamie Whellis (played by Jennifer Aniston), who soon became their stepmom. Zadie was initially skeptical but quickly grew to love Jamie and her two daughters, Brooklyn (played by Chloe Grace Moretz) and Georgia (played by Florence Pugh).
In Zadie's middle school years, the family moved temporarily to Dallas, Texas, where Weston was stationed, but when he was called back overseas, Zadie and her step family returned to Mission Creek.

Delta Pandora James (played by Olivia Holt) is a sweet, sensitive, and sassy teenager who's always ready to help others. While she's caring and beautiful, she can show a tougher side when needed. Delta is preppy, perky, and stunningly gorgeous.
Her mom, Jessica James (played by Danielle Fishel), is a travel agent and school room mom. However, she tends to favor her youngest child, Logan, which strains her relationship with Delta. Dean James (played by Brad Pitt), Delta's dad, works as a technical analyst for the FBI, making him pretty cool. He's very relaxed and laid-back, providing a calm and easygoing influence in the family. His relaxed demeanor balances out Jessica's more involved and occasionally preferential parenting style.
Delta has three siblings: Lilly (played by Emily Osment), the oldest; Daniella, or Dani, (played by Chloe Lukasiak), her younger sister; and Logan (played by Jacob Tremblay), the youngest.
She has a close, yet complex, relationship with her siblings. As the second oldest, she has a nurturing bond with her younger siblings. Delta is closest with her older sister, Lilly. They share a strong bond and provide each other with support and understanding, especially when struggling with their mom.
