Zadie's POV:
The Fourth of July.
Easily one of the best holidays.
I mean, really, what's better than a day filled with hot dogs, playing mermaids, and regretting not putting on sunscreen after your mom told you seven different times.
It was one of the few days every year where nobody cared if you spent the whole afternoon half-drowned in the pool.
After finally convincing myself to get out of bed at the early time of 12:42 pm, I went into the bathroom and pulled my hair into a high ponytail. A few stubborn pieces framed my face no matter how many times I tucked them back.
"Good enough."
I threw on a pair of high-waisted denim shorts, a white tank top with little blue stars.
As I was brushing my teeth, my phone buzzed on my bathroom counter.
Del would like to FaceTime...
I answered with a mouth full of toothpaste.
"Mm?"
"Nice."
I laughed, quickly rinsing my mouth.
"Good morning to you too."
"Zadie, it's almost 1."
"What else did you expect? Me to be up before noon?"
She rolled her eyes. "Do you have plans today?"
I pulled my makeup bag down from the shelf.
"Other than hoping to get a hot dog at some point and horrific tan lines, no."
"Okay, cool. Cause I've been thinking."
"Oh? Should I be worried?"
I set my phone up so I could still see her as I took my glasses off to do my makeup.
"Would it be weird if I invited the Davenports over today?"
My eyebrows shifted, "why would that be weird?"
"I don't know." She sighed, "I guess it just kind of hit me that Adam hasn't met my parents yet."
"Really?" I unscrewed my mascara, using it to point at my phone. "That's surprising."
"I know. And it's not like they're super intimidating." She huffed, setting her phone up as she buried her face in her bed, "what do I do?"
"I wouldn't think too far into it, Del." I told her, grabbing the phone, "With everyone there, I think it'd be better. It'd be less awkward."
"I guess you have a point. My mom does love you." She sat up, fixing her hair. "I just really want everyone to hang out today."
"Yeah, I was hoping you'd say that." I grabbed my phone, carrying it downstairs to my kitchen. "Wren's at a birthday slumber party, my dad's overseas, Alex might go hang with Jamie, and my mother has to work part of the day."
"So, it's just you and Alex right now?"
"Yup." I held the phone out as I got a to-go box from the refrigerator, opening it up to leftover fried rice.
"Are you eating fried rice for breakfast?"
I took a bite, "technically, it's lunch."
She scoffed, "Okay, well, I'll send a text to the group chat. And if Alex's here, bring her with. I know she's friends with Dani."
