"So umm, when did you start karate?" I asked fiddling with my thumbs
"When I was 10 years old" Alistair replied through the cubicle door. I didn't have the guts to ask him to come out of the bathroom so I could see his face, I felt that he should do it in his own time, if he ever would.
"Cool. have you ever broken your leg or something from it?" I asked curiously
"Yes. a number of times, I have a few metal replacements from injuries"
"Ouch" I cringed," Why do you put yourself through that?"
"Why do you put yourself through rugby?" He answered.
"Touché" I laughed
"Indeed" He agreed.
I kind of started hanging out with Alistair in the bathroom that nobody knows about at break more often, as dodgy as it sounds. But I actually enjoy it, even though we don't look at each other and sit on opposite sides of the cubicle door in a way it's better. You find out a lot more, it puts a whole knew meaning to 'blind date' .
Though it isn't one.
"Do you like chicken?" I asked. We got passed the stage of awkward questions without feeling awkward.
"Not really, but its edible"
"Are you serious?" I gasped," Chicken is the best"
"I like sushi" He chuckled.
"That sounds disgusting"
"You never know unless you've tried" He said eagerly, "I will show you sometime"
"I like this" I said thoughtfully," This hanging out with you thing, its nice" I felt my stomach churn as I said that.
"Me too" He said after a moment of silence," Do you want to come to the library with me?"
"The library?" I grimaced.
"I need a new book. I finished this one" He replied
"Geez, you read far too fast for your own good, didn't you get that book 3 days ago?"
"Yes I did" I heard him chuckle," Do you want to accompany me or not?"
"Okay" I sighed,"Can I walk with you? I haven't seen your face in a while. Not that I miss it or anything I just...." I trailed off not knowing where I was going with this," Are you going to come out?" I finally concluded.
"Okay" He said after a moment of silence,"Just don't laugh at me"
"Why would I laugh at you?" I frowned
"Because" he said as he walked opened the cubicle, I felt so horrible when I saw him. He had bruises on his shoulders and the one I gave him on the face was fading away with a light purple.
"Wow" I stared at him as he looked away from my gaze," I'm really sorry" I chocked out as I stepped aside for him to walk out.
"It's okay" He tried to smile but I knew it hurt,"Karate is tough"
I followed him in silence as he walked out the bathroom and made his way upstairs past the rugby field before we past a few classes and stopped at a big brown door.
"I don't ever remember seeing this" I said in confusion," Has it always been here?"
"I wouldn't know" Alistair shrugged," I only came this year"
"Right" I face palmed myself as I followed him into the endless shelves of books that were occasionally cut off by sofas in between. But all in all it was a pretty big library, the walls were a caramel brown and the wooden floor was just a shade darker. It was rather dim but there were lamps near by if anyone wanted to read.
"What books do you like to read" I asked as I stared at the shelf he was looking through.
"Mainly mystery, but I sometimes go for action and reality" He replied once he found a book and walked over to the librarian, Ms.Jones.
"Cool" I waved my arms back and forth while I waited for Alistair to get his book checked, once he did I followed him to the school gate where he sat under the oak tree cross legged and pushed up his thick glasses again; school had ended just an hour ago and it was Friday so barely anyone was here. Usually I would walk home or take my time walking around the school, but today I didn't really feel like doing so.
"Why are you still waiting here?" I frowned, usually he leaves pretty early after school ends.
"I leave when I feel like it, lately I've been leaving a while longer then everybody else due to the state of my facial features" He stated giving me an insecure as he looked away from my eyes.
"I don't think it's that bad" I shrugged," Everybody gets bruises once in a while. And I'm really sorry about punching you" I said guiltily and stared at the floor.
"I told you, I forgive you" He nodded.
"Do you like clouds?" I gulped
"I've never really paid attention to them"
"Do you want to make shapes out of them?" I suggested feeling nervous for some reason.
We stared at the huge white clouds floating around in the pale blue sky, it actually looked pretty cool. and I was actually having a good time. We made occasional comments about the colour blue and whether clouds are actually candy floss.
"I disagree" Alistair stated informatively," If you say so, what flavor would it be?" He challenged him to answer.
"Lemon" I replied with a laugh.
"Let's agree to disagree" He turned his head to look at me.
"Okay" I said and raised my hands in defeat.
We continued to look at the sky until it turned orange the sky clouds became pink and orange, it was really magnificent. We laid down in awed silence and watched them float by while the sun began to set.
"Would you like to come to my karate tournament this weekend?" Alistair asked fiddling with his thumbs and avoided my gaze. And I could tell he was waiting for me to say no, I could feel him mentally preparing himself for disappointment.
"Sure" I turned my head around and looked at him. His green eyes beamed with excitement at me.
"Really?" He exclaimed sitting up in surprise, "I don't want you to go just because I attempted to ask you a second time in hopes of-"
"I said sure Alistair, don't make me change my mind" I laughed.
"Okay" He smiled sheepishly and bit his lip, "Do you want me to send you the details? Or should I pick you up? Or maybe we can meet each other there. If you cant then you can come over to my house and we'll go toget-" He rambled on in nervous panic, I'm beginning to notice he's never really gone out with people.
"I'll meet you there" I interrupted him so he would shut up," Send me the details, I guess I should give you my number" I sat awkwardly next to him.
"Indeed" He said giving me his phone, which was a Samsung Galaxy S5 might I add, and I added my name to his contacts, "Thank you" he whispered with a smile. An actual genuine smile, and I've never seen him like that before. And it kind of made me happy too.
"For what?" I asked in curiosity as I looked at the bruises on his shoulder, which turned into a light green shadows making it look almost unrecognizable.
"For being my closest acquaintance, even if it is out of pity. I enjoy having your company"
"Me too" I whispered and stared at his bright green eyes, I never noticed how vividly green they were.
"Me too"
