I smiled -
that seemed to be enough to fool everyone -
apart from you.
my forced laughs and "I'm fine"s
convinced everybody
but you.

I never quite understood
how you did it.
I didn't think anyone actually studied
or noticed the really small things
outside of books,
but I guess you just
did.

and I guess you did,
because you could relate.
you knew exactly what I was doing,
because you did so yourself;
passing everyone by with the same
false joy.

I never truly knew fate
until you came about.
