happy
ˈhapi/
adjective
1. feeling or showing pleasure or contentment.

happiness
/ˈhapɪnəs/
noun
the state of being happy.

these are direct definitions from google, a general idea of what happiness is. yes, it's an emotion with a positive effect on the human brain, but what does it truly mean to be genuinely... happy? happiness stretches far beyond a simple definition.

happiness is boxed by society; they say wealth and success is the way to go. but what about the middle-class, ordinary people? and the people below that? do they never experience happiness? false. this couldn't be more inaccurate.

to me, happiness can be triggered by the smallest of things. the small, short moments of something special that make the corners of your lips turn up, even if it's only slightly- those moments.

happiness is opening your eyes after a good night's sleep. happiness is the darling little dog that runs to you after a long, tiring day. happiness is reading a good book with warm tea on the side. happiness is comforting hugs, the kind you never want to let go of. those little things - sprinkles of happiness - are what encourage my positive thoughts.

I may not be popular, but I have a handful of incredible friends. I may not be rich, but at least I have all I need and more. and I may not have the smoothest, most easy-going life, but at least I'm living, I have a roof over my head and I'm getting an education.

happiness is overlooking the problems and searching for the sweet moments that make us smile and our eyes wrinkle, even if they're minimal. looking on the bright side, and searching for the light through the cracks.

we are never alone. but don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we all need to bottle up our negative emotions and keep strong, because in that way, we are only crushing ourselves. share your troubles, have a cry and leave the past where it belongs - in the past. allow yourself to heal. feel. live.

in conclusion, happiness is not a straight forward word with a set definition. it all depends on you personally, and your perspective of the world and what it means to be happy to you. and although bad times can be overwhelming enough to cause us to dwell on negativity, there is always some happiness waiting to be recognized. no matter how many cracks there may be, there will always be light shining through. we need to stop counting the cracks in our hearts, minds and lives, and learn to acknowledge the light pouring in.

there is always light through the cracks.
