The Monster
-Rayn-
It's black eyes watch my every move, calculating when and where I would drop the food. It opens it's beak and lets out a long screech, a warning, to any other birds that this was His hunt.
I throw a piece of turkey meat into the air and watch with fascination as the hawk dives at amazing speed for the flesh, it's golden and rust colored plumage catching the patches of sun through the trees. It's glinting talons snatch the flesh with amazing grace and timing. Then the forest floor is silent except for the beating of it's wings in the distance.
I sigh and finish what was left of my dinner, which consisted of bread and a wild turkey I had put an arrow through.
The sun was setting low in the trees, so by my guess it was about five-thirty. Sighing, I stretched out on the grass, gazing through the branches and leaves. It was nice to pretend for a moment that I was just a normal person, living a normal life, with normal parents. But even if I had never left, would still not be regular.
I pushed my traveling thoughts to the corners of my mind and instead focused on the soft breeze that was blowing through my dark hair and over my bare face.
I tensed, as I heard the rustling of Amelia's skirts blow around her legs. She was by the fire, and from the sound I imagined that she had finished her food.
She didn't know that I was only a few yards away, hiding from her.
I had tried to kill her, but I couldn't. Something had snapped inside of me when she tried to accept death, like a real person should.
I couldn't get her face out of my head, of the feeling of her soft fingers on my face.
I heard a twig snap and my hands flew to the mask around my neck. As I pulled it over my nose I realized it was Amelia gathering firewood. She glanced at me, her eyes tierd, before bending down to pick up another log to add to the bundle in her arms. I gulped, before I headed to her.
"Here," I took the pile gingerly from her arms, careful not to rip her dress. "I'll finish. You go to sleep."
She didn't argue, nor did she say anything. She just turned away from me and walked back to the fire, her arms wrapped around herself.
No matter how broken she seemed, her eyes still said she was strong.

In,
Out.
Up,
Down.
I sigh as I watch her every breath. The stress lines on her face disappeared when she slept, making her look like the young woman she was.
Not that she wasn't beautiful.
We were to leave earlier today, but I had decided to let her sleep a little. She was so tierd last night.
