Chapter 24

10: 28 A.M.

The doors burst open as the four run out of the building. They sprint across the parking lot, nearing the van while Haru stands guard outside of it.

"Hurry! Hop in now!" Haru yells, the four running as fast as they can. It could have been an action movie scene. But it's not. This is their reality.

They all hop into the packed car, Haru hopping in last as Kimmie presses the gas pedal. The car zooms out of the parking lot and soon they're out 

"Fancy seeing you here, Scarlet," Leif says with a laugh. Catching her breath, Scarlet scowls after she notices how close to Leif's face she is. 

"I'm only sitting on your lap because this car," she says, taking another breath, "has little space." She quickly moved down to the floor, crossing her arms. Hate or denial?

Here was the order: Kimmie and Ellie in the front, Leif to the left with Scarlet now on the floor, Wilson in the middle with Angelo on the floor, Connor to the right with Riley on the floor, Jonah in the back left, Queen in the middle,  Haru to the right, Jayna in the trunk left, Hau'oli in the trunk middle, and Steve in the trunk right. Jayna wanted as much distance from Wilson as possible.

"Where am I going?" Kimmie calmly asks as she speeds down the road. It felt endless. The road seemed too long, and sooner or later the scientists would discover who they were. 

"You guys are making Kimmie drive?" Angelo asks. "She only has her permit!"

"Well, she's the one who can drive and we have to get away now don't we?" Jayna asks. "Although I think we're not in much safety in this car." Connor rolled his eyes. 

"Is she always like this?" Wilson whispers to Connor. Startled, Connor replies, "Um, yeah, don't mind her."

"What's up with you?" Angelo asks Jayna from the floor. 

"Keep going until you find another roadway or something," Scarlet directs.

"Nothing," Jayna replies.

"What the heck is going on and what happened back there?" Ellie suddenly asks, and all eyes turn to her.

Queen grumbles for a bit before sighing. "You scared us!"

"Are you feeling better?" asks Hau'oli.

"Yes, I'm fine. It's you guys, are you guys okay?"

"Ellie, you were the one who was knocked out. We're fine," Haru commented.

"Kimmie let me know what you guys were up to, so I'm perfectly fine. I just hit my head that's all," Ellie simply replied.

It had been a nearly an hour. Nearly an hour had passed, and the group still hadn't come out. Ellie was still knocked out. 

Kimmie stepped away from the van, just for a minute. She needed to check if her friends were okay. 

When she walked up to the building, she didn't see the door swing open to reveal her friends. Instead, the door swung open to reveal the one person she came for.

"Alfie," she mouthed in shock. It hadn't felt real until his arms were around her. She didn't know she was crying until she looked up at him, her vision blurry from the tears. 

"Kimmie, what in the world are you doing out here? Here? In this area?" Alfie asks her. 

"We were looking for you," Kimmie begins to explain. "But then there was this whole thing that happened and now my friends are stuck there. I didn't think I'd see you."
