Meanwhile, 700 miles away. Aaron, Elizabeth, and Cailey sat at home awaiting our arrival.
Aaron was sitting in Zach's room, looking through the files on his desk. He shuffled all the papers when he was done looking at them, and laid them back on the desk. It had been almost three days since the others had left for Texas. Aaron had been to Texas before on vacation, with his parents and three brothers. Cailey had gone to sleep the previous night complaining about her head. Aaron and Elizabeth decided to let her sleep in. They cooked breakfast for Cailey while she slept. When Cailey woke up, her head still hurt badly. She assumed it was just a bad headache. She walked down the stairs to see Aaron holding a plate of food for her. It was eggs and bacon with a piece of burnt toast.
"I made the toast." Aaron said like a proud child.
"Thank you, Aaron. That was very nice of you. Have you guys seen any activity outside?" She asked smiling. Aaron shook his head.
"It's been quiet ever since Drayton and the others left. We need to go out for another supply run. We're almost completely out of food. But we're still overstocked with guns." Aaron said as Elizabeth entered the room. Her gunshot wound was healed but it left a scar in her left arm.
"You feeling any better, Cailey?" Elizabeth asked. Cailey shook her head.
"Still doesn't feel too, good. I'll be fine. We need to go somewhere and get some food. Anywhere in mind?" Cailey asked.
"There was still stuff at the Gas station Drayton and Zach went to." Aaron said remembering when they had found him. He was sure he wouldn't of lasted another day if they hadn't of found him.
"One of us have to stay here. The others will go back to the gas station and get supplies." Aaron said."I'll stay if you want to go, Cailey."
"Okay, we'll go and you guard the house." Elizabeth said. Cailey had been in charge of watching the house every time someone had to leave. This was the first time leaving the house since the attacks. They grabbed their backpacks and their guns. Elizabeth grabbed the pistol Ben had left behind on his bed and Cailey grabbed the shotgun Drayton had shot on the day of the attacks. They said goodbye to Aaron and walked out the front door. They started walking down the road to the gas station. It was late in the afternoon and they would barely make it home before dark if they hurried.
"Feels good to get out of the house." Cailey said as they walked.
"It really does. Um... Cailey?" She asked.
"What?"
"I'm worried about The others going all that way. Do you think they're okay?" Elizabeth asked, not turning around to face Cailey.
"I'm sure they can take care of themselves. They'll be back in a few days." Cailey answered looking down the road. The gas station was on the horizon. After a bit more walking, they were at the gas station's door. Cailey reached out and pushed the door open. it was dark inside, other than the light seeping in from the windows. They both went and grabbed all the food they could carry. Once their backpacks were full, they started to walk out the front door. Elizabeth gasped and pulled Cailey down, out of sight.
"What?" Cailey whispered."There are three guys walking towards the gas station. There's no truck but they have guns." Elizabeth whispered back, peeking out the window. Just as she poked her head out, one of the men were looking in the window. He saw Elizabeth and pulled out his gun. He yelled something to his men and fired his pistol at the window. The glass shattered all over the ground and Cailey and Elizabeth. Cailey's head started to throb. She suddenly felt very angry. Like someone had put her in Rage mode. Elizabeth could see Cailey's anger.
"What do we do?" Elizabeth asked in fear.
"Just wait." She said gritting her teeth. The three men were only a few feet from the door when Cailey stood up with her shotgun. She shot twice and sent two of the men flying to the ground. She tried to shoot again but the last man shot his pistol and the bullet hit her gun. It fell from her hands and the man pointed the gun at Cailey's head. Then a loud pop filled her ears. She shut her eyes and waited for death. When nothing happened, she opened her eyes and found the shooter dead on the floor. It was Elizabeth. She had shot the man in the face and killed him instantly. Cailey felt very dizzy and sat down. All the anger she had just felt was gone. Elizabeth extended her hand to pull Cailey up. Cailey grabbed it and stood up. The shotgun was busted and couldn't fire. Cailey dropped it on the ground and they walked around the men's bodies. They started going in the direction of home.
"Well, this was sure a exciting Girl time." Cailey said. Elizabeth just smiled. Then, they both went home to Aaron.
