The next day, I heard about a huge commotion going on in the prison yard. I was so curious because I didn't know and staying in that small room was driving me absolutely crazy! Something is going on! I thought wildly. I need to be out there! I can help! UGH! What is going on?! A guard suddenly came to my door. He unlocked the doors and said, "Come on." "Where are we going?" I asked nervously. The guard clipped the handcuffs back around my wrists. "You'll see," he said. I was led down the hallway and we took a sharp turn. The guard opened the door and said, "Is this the one you were asking for, ma'am?" The room only occupied two people; A depressing yet angry looking girl with long black hair in two tails running down her front and royal looking robes. Behind her was a boy of about sixteen... my age... wearing a prison uniform. He had messy black hair, pale skin and on the left side of his face was a deep red burn. Zuko! I thought. Zuko looked up. In that small moment, everything was silent and we locked eyes for just a moment. He looked so different. His hair was longer and he looked thinner (If that was even possible). Now, remember what I said earlier about breaking my own promise, well, I broke it right there. I don't care what I said before, as soon as I locked eyes with Zuko, all the bad memories came flooding back. He lied to me, led me on, betrayed me, and burned me. At that very moment, I didn't care where I was or what was about to happen to me. I hated him!
The guard shoved me inside. "This the one you were looking for?" The girl looked at Zuko and saw the way he was looking at me. Then she looked at me and scowled. "Yes," she said. Her voice sounded raspy and annoyed. "That's her." The guard nodded, stepped outside and closed the door. "Look," I piped up. "I don't know what's going on here but-" "Shut up!" the girl said fiercely. She slapped me hard. "Mai, stop!" Zuko said. "This is between you and me. Leave her out of it." Mai ignored his comment and said, "This is who you left me for? This scrawny little thing?" Why was everyone referring to me as a thing? I didn't get it. Anyway, the girl, Mai, started walking around the room, taunting Zuko and myself whiled doing so. "You might have told me that you had another girl on the side, you cheating bastard." "Mai," said Zuko. "It wasn't like that. At least, it didn't start like that." "And what do you mean by that?" Mai said angrily. "Um," I said timidly. "I don't mean to intrude but-" "I thought I told you to shut it!" she said, whacking me again. "Stop! Please!" Zuko begged. "What do you want me to do?" She looked angrily at him. "What could you do? What could you possibly do? Well, you could have told me yourself, not just a lousy note. You could have taken me with you, you could have not just shoved me to the side like I didn't exist. And most of all," she looked back at me. "You could told me about your little slut here!" She grabbed me by the collar and pulled me to my feet. Zuko and I locked eyes again. There was a look of pure shock and terror on his face, like for some reason, he didn't want Mai to hurt me. Yeah right. I thought sourly. Mai looked at me with a look of utter hate and poisonous resentment. She shoved me and I hit the wall, now more frightened and dizzy than I was before. Mai loomed over me. "Next time think, before you go intruding on someone's life." "I didn't mean to intrude." I squeaked. "I just-" Mai smacked me again. "That's what you get!" said bitterly. "Mai-" Zuko began. Suddenly, a guard burst through the door, cutting him off, and said, "Ma'am, there's a riot going on. I've been sent here to protect you." Mai looked at the guard. "I don't need any protection," she said snidely. "Ha," said Zuko. "Believe me, she doesn't." "I'm sorry ma'am, but I'm on strict orders from your uncle to protect you," the guard said.
Zuko realized that he had an opportunity to escape. He bended a ball of fire at the guard's feet. I ducked down and covered my head. "Come on!" Zuko said as he grabbed my hand and we raced out of the room. "Get off me!" I heard Mai say as we ran out the door. The guards ran at the door but in a flash, Zuko and I were outside and he had closed the door. I looked back at Zuko, who was looking at Mai through the opening. Mai was giving him the death glare. He looked away guiltily. "Come on," he said again.
Once we were out in the prison yard, we found Sokka, Hakoda, a girl with short, reddish brown hair who was probably Suki, and the guy I talked to on the gondola. Apparently, his name was Chit Sang. The whole prison yard was in chaos, everyone was fighting with someone else. "Okay," Sokka said. "We got Zuko...and Tatiana. Not sure where you came from... Okay. We're all here. Now all we need to do is nab the warden and get to the gondola." "How do you plan to do that, genius?" Geo said snidely, as she metal-bended the handcuffs from my wrists. Sokka frowned. "Not sure," he said. Zuko looked at Sokka angrily. "I thought you thought this through!" he yelled. "I thought you told me it's okay to not think things through!" Sokka said in hysterics. "I thought we all agreed that Zuko was an idiot and that no one should listen to him," Geo said. I giggled. Zuko glared at her and then back at Sokka. "Not everything, but this is kind of important." I looked back at Suki, but she was already running towards the wall. Then, using her amazing leg strength, she jumped from the rioting ground up to one of the middle balconies. "Wait up!" I yelled. I clumsily ran through the crowd with Geo following close behind. We ran up to the wall and then used metal bending to climb up and join Suki, who had just knocked out the guards. The warden stared at us. "You wouldn't dare," he said. Suki grinned. She flipped over the warden while Geo and I ran around the front. We socked him in the jaw and as he spun around dizzily, Suki grabbed a red string off his belt and tied his hands while I pulled his headband down around his mouth as a gag. "Sorry, warden," said Geo. "You're our prisoner now." We grinned at our handiwork and turned around at the rest of the guys who had finally caught up and were struggling to catch their breath. "About time," I said. "We've got the warden," said Suki. "Now let's go!"
