It was now morning and Dan and Paul were in the kitchen drinking coffee, leaning on the counter. Both Dan and Paul were tired. Both of them had messy hair too.Dan's hair is messed up because he couldn't sleep, just like Paul. Rolling all over the place, worrying about Evelyn and their mother, and listening to Evelyn screaming.
It was the longest night for everybody.
Evelyn was screaming in her sleep all night. Daniel couldn't do anything because he made it worst. Paul tried his best to calm her down but, every hour they were woken up.
Evelyn was still in bed, and she's been quiet for over an hour.
They both sipped their coffee. Paul was still thinking. He put his cup down and turned to Dan and crossed his arms. Dan stopped drinking his coffee with his cup to his mouth.
"What?" Dan asked nervously, lowering his cup.
"Evelyn told me what happened. Skipping work Daniel. Really?"
"I know. I shouldn't have."
"What I don't understand is why. You value your sister so much. Why did you do it?" Paul asked.
"I.....I don't know."
"It pains me to see you two like this. What happened to you two? You guys were so, so close. You never fought. Not even for the last cookie, or for who was going to duel me first. You put her before you. She respected you. What happened?"
Dan sighed and put his cup down.
"I don't know. But it was my fault. I broke our promise."
"Daniel...."
They were silent for a minute.
"Hey, I was wondering, why doesn't Evelyn like being called Eve?" Paul asked.
Dan sighed.
"At her old school she was bullied. They started teasing her more after they heard me call her Eve. They used Eve to tease her. So, she didn't want me to call her Eve anymore. I came up with Ever Green. But, Eve is easier to say sometimes. I just comes out."
"God. So much has happened to her."
"Yeah..... I wish I helped her more."
"Daniel, you can't always help. And you did the best you could."
"I-I.....got to get to work." He walks out and back upstairs to change.
Paul puts his hands on the counter and leans on it, looking out the window.
When Dan was done changing he stopped at Evelyn's door that was open. He looked inside. Evelyn was asleep facing the wall.
He slowly opened the door and walked in. He walked over to the bed and kneeled beside it. He sighed, and put his hand on her arm. His eyes started to water.
"Eve. I'm so sorry. If I could take it all back, I would. You don't deserve this. Remember, I still love you, even if you don't love me. I know I lost you." He leans over and kisses her head.
He gets up and heads over to the door. He looks at her one last time and leaves.
