I tapped my foot against the carpeted waiting room floor. I was nervous, who wouldn’t be though? I was told that I’d be hearing my baby’s heartbeat today. I looked around the office and saw other pregnant women, all farther along than I was at the moment. They were all holding their bellies and I bit my lip., Should I be holding mine? Sure I felt the need to protect it and sometimes I did it absentmindedly but should I do it now?
“Nora?” I heard my name being called. I looked up and saw a nurse dressed in plum scrubs holding papers while standing in the door that lead to the appointment rooms.
I smiled slightly and picked up my bag on the chair next to me and walked over to her. “Nora?” She asked me again and I nodded. “How are you today?”
“Good.” I lied.
She laughed, “You look scared, first time?”
I let out a relieved laughed, “That obvious?”
“Dont’ worry dear, everything will be fine.” She assured me, “Just stand on the scale please.” After she got all my measurement that you get at a doctor she left me in a small room. I tried to regulate my breathing but I couldn’t. I wish Asher could have been here for this. I need him to calm me down, also it would have been cool for us to hear the heartbeat together but I get that he’s still on tour.
I was only alone for a few minutes when a knock sounded on the door before it opened. “Hello.” She smiled walking in, “How are you today.”
“Good.” I smiled back at her.
“Nora, right?”
“That’s me.” I nodded.
“Alright, everything looks good so far. How about we do some blood tests first?” I couldn’t find my voice so I just nodded. “Perfect. I’ll have the nurse come and take some tubes of that, then we’ll get it tested and we’ll see how far along you are.”
“Great.” I managed in a whisper.
The doctor left and a moment later the same nurse I had before came in with a tray of tubes and needles. It was over before I knew it, and I usually hated needles but I was so nervous that I didn’t even notice.
“Just relax.” My doctor laughed making her way back into the room after about an hour. “You look scared to death. Everything is fine, you’re are five weeks along. So a little over a month.”
I thought back to that time frame and all I came up with was that we were on tour. So my baby was conceived in a random location, cool.
“Well now let’s check the heartbeat, shall we.” I nodded and laid back and she came over to my side with a little machine that I didn’t notice she had been holding before. She squirted gel on my stomach and then pressed the head of the device around.
I held my breath as I waited. Then, I heard it.
The little thumping of my baby rang in my ears. I have a person inside me! With a tiny heartbeat! I felt my lips stretched into a full blown grin while tears leaked down my face. I so wished Asher was here with me.
“Nice and healthy sounding.” The doctor smiled at me sweetly.
“That’s good.” I breathed out.
The doctor sent me home after asking if I had any questions, which I didn’t. She also gave me my prescription meds.
As soon as I was out I called him and he answer on the second ring.
“How’d it go?” He asked excitedly, “I wish I could have been there.”
“I wish you could have too.” I pouted slightly and then I got excited, “It was the best thing Asher! I heard our baby’s heartbeat!”
“That sounds amazing!” He told me, “How far along are we?”
“Five weeks.” I grinned.
“Five weeks! But…” He trailed off, probably trying to figure out when it happened. “Holy shit!”
“I love you.” I laughed and opened my car door and hopped in.
“Right back at cha babe.” he laughed along with me.
Shaking my head I started the car, “I have to go, I’ll call you later.” I told him.
“What? Why?” He asked confused.
“Uh cause I have to drive home.” I spoke in a duh tone and he groaned.
“But…” He trailed off and then sighed, “Fine. But I have a surprise for you.”
I rolled my eyes. “Another surprise?” I mean honestly how many surprises could one person give?
“It’s not really a surprise I guess.” he seemed to shrug. “but I really like the word surprise, so why not?”
I laughed, “Right, why not? So what is this ‘surprise’?”
“You know that if I tell you it would ruin the fun.” He taunted.
“Alright big shot, I can wait.”
“I don’t believe you.”
“Well that sucks.” I laughed. “Asher, I really have to drive home now. I’m sitting in my car in the clinic parking lot.”
“Fine. Fine.” he sighed. “I bet you look cute though.”
“Asher.” I smiled, I knew what he was doing. He was trying to distracted me so I couldn’t hang up on him.
“Babe, I’m serious.”
“Bye Asher.” I grinned and I heard a soft groan from him.
“Bye Nora.”
I hung up before he could stop me again and drove home. I missed him.
Thee shortest chapter EVER! Also totally boring. Sorry it's just a filler but the next chapter, I promise, will be longer and a hell of a lot better!
