Sleep crept away from me just as the prey does it's predator. When I hesitantly agreed to go on a date with Landon, and unwillingly fell in love with him, I didn't expect to end up here, laying in my best friend house responsible for two children, three if I counted my lost boyfriend. I know Landon's mom wasn't trying to put all of this on me, but somehow I still felt like she was hoping I could help. How long have their lives been this way? How in the world am I supposed to help? Most importantly, where is Landon?
A beam of sunshine slipped through the curtains and woke my alert brain. I opened my eyes slowly and peeled myself out of the guest bed. The clock read '6:10,' I dawdled downstairs and into the kitchen. I stood in the entrance for a bit just eyeing the kitchen and thinking of the sleeping travelers upstairs. I rummaged through the refrigerator and cupboard in search of breakfast supplies. As much as my heart yearned to be their mother figure my body was not willing to comply. So, I pulled out a box of breakfast biscuits and left it on the counter. I slugged to the bathroom and washed up quickly. In one of Nyla's burgundy bath robes, I emerged from the bathroom and into the guest room across from Nyla's where the children had slept. They laid across the bed. Somaiya nestled in her brothers arms and them both sleeping away their troubles. Just admiring their serenity, I shed a tear knowing that they may never have this again.
"Wake up, it's time to get ready for school." I shook them lightly.
"Hm, already!" Caleb stretched.
"Yeah, already?" Somaiya opened her eyes.
"Yes, already." "Shower Caleb, come with me princesa." I said looking between them sat up on the bed.
Both of their faces began to sink within a split second and I immediately wished I could turn back the time.
"What's wrong?" I sat on the bed beside her.
"Landon calls her that." Caleb commented.
I looked back towards her watching the slow action of the tear rolling down her left cheek.
"I miss my brother." She darted to my shoulder.
"I'm gonna shower." Caleb sniffed dashing to the bathroom
She sobbed hard on my shoulder and I didn't have a clue as what to do. I was stunned, how was I to say that everything was going to fine if I didn't know. How was I to tell her to stop crying and missing him when I did too. I held her in my arms trying to compose my own tears. I pulled her back and wiped the falling tears off of my face.
"You're a princess, you're too beautiful to be crying." I smiled at her.
She profusely rubbed her eyes and smiled back at me.
"He's gonna be fine, he has you and Caleb wishing him the best for him."
"For now, you need to worry about you, and shower to get ready for school." I tickled her.
"Let's go princess." Kyle called to her from the door post with Nyla.
He put her on his shoulders and took her to Nyla's bathroom. Nyla came towards me with a soft smile and sat beside me.
"This is hard." My eyes welled up.
"You're doing good." She rubbed my back.
"Did you shower already?" I asked.
