He answered his phone happily.
"Hey ma, what's up!" He smiled.
"Mom what's wrong? Have you been crying?" His face changed.
"Okay. I'm on my way." He hung up perturbed.
"Brains put on your clothes, we gatta go!" He demanded.
We rushed back upstairs and quickly redressed. He threw his jeans and shirt on and dashed downstairs.
"Acacia, hurry up!" He yelled.
I quickly pushed my legs through my pants and ran downstairs. He grabbed his coat, shut off the lights and we left.
He was driving at ninety miles per hour with tense hands.
"Is everything okay?" I asked.
"I don't know." His jaw clenched tighter. I comfortingly rested the palms of my hands on his arm. The glistening moon followed us as Landon continued to speed.
He took a hard turn and parked the car halfway in the driveway.
"Stay here." He said.
He jumped out of the car and slammed the door shut.
"Ma, what's wrong." He yelled running towards the woman seated on the snowy porch.
I came out of the car slowly, and walked towards the modern brown house.
"What for?" He yelled.
"What for mom?" He yelled louder.
"I wouldn't pay my dues." She cried.
"What dues . . . . y-you owe him nothing!" He began before spinning around to me.
"I thought I told you to stay in the car." He huffed, noticing me creeping up beside him.
"Landon, she's just trying to be supportive, Calmate." The familiar beauty said.
She sat on the porch steps looking up at me. A huge bruise masked her cheek and an oozing cut above her eye.
"Mom . . . . this is my girlfriend Acacia. Acacia, this is my mom." He sighed.
"Hi, she's gorgeous." She smiled.
"Thank you. You too." I smiled back.
She made an attempt to smile once more, but couldn't.
"Acacia, can you take Caleb and Somaiya inside please." He said pacing.
"Okay." I nodded walking past his mother who was a broken mess.
"I'm sorry we had to meet this way." She whispered up at me as I slipped into the house.
I took Caleb and Somaiya inside and closed the door. I flicked the lights, but nothing happened.
"Power's out again, so it's no use." Caleb sighed.
"Mom has to work her magic again." He said looking at me in the dark.
"I'm scared." His little sister shrieked.
"Yeah, I am a little too." Caleb sounded stuffy.
I walked over to the cowering children, and hugged them.
"It'll be okay." I assured them.
It hurt my heart to see what they go through, and they were only children. It puts things into perspective, showing me just how lucky I am. But also how sorry I am that I couldn't give them the chance to have my life.
