× × ×

THE GARAGE DOOR SLAMMED shut behind chase as he entered the house. no one was home since everyone was still in school and his parents were working. he had ditched after fourth period and got an uber home. he wasn't in the mood to be at school and he wasn't in the mood to interact with people. he made his way to his room and laid on his bed, curling up into a ball under the covers.

he closed his eyes and ignored his vibrating phone that was still in his pocket. he wasn't tired and didn't want to sleep, but he felt like staying under his covers and closing his eyes would be an escape. he knew it was either his friend group chat asking where he had gone or the family group chat asking what dinner was going to be. either way he didn't care. he didn't want to interact with either.

upon receiving never ending phone calls he pulled his phone out of his pocket. he had three missed calls from amara and matteo, two from tyler and alec, one from bailey, and one from a random number that he didn't know. he tossed his phone to the bottom of his bed and flopped to his other side. he pulled the covers up over his head and closed his eyes again.

he didn't know why he felt like he wanted the world to end. he was just so tired and anxious and sad. he didn't know why he was sad either. it was like a wave of sadness slapped him in the face in the middle of class earlier that morning. he tried to stay in school, but feeling so miserable for an unknown reason made him feel unsafe. he felt safe at home in his bed surrounded by silence and blankets. the only disturbance in the room was the vibration coming from his phone. it had never rung so much, but due to him running away recently, everyone was probably cautious.

his stomach started to growl and he sighed, wrapping his arms around himself. he wanted to eat, but didn't want to get out of bed. he got tired of his phone vibrating the whole bed, so he picked it up to see the random number calling him again. after declining the call he noticed fourteen missed calls from the stranger. as he unlocked his phone to look at his texts the bedroom door swung open and alec sighed in relief.

"chase, thank god." he walked over to chase and held his face in his hands. "are you okay? did something happen?" chase remained silent and tiredly looked at his brother. alec put a hand to the younger boy's forehead and frowned. "you're not warm."

"i'm not sick." he mumbled before laying back down. "i'm just tired and want to be alone."

"did something happen at school?" alec questioned. "does it have to do with that boy you were telling me about?"

chase shook his head quickly, "no. i'm just—" he sighed, "i don't know. i'm feeling weird. i don't want to interact with anyone and i don't want to do anything."

alec smiled, sitting next to him. "that happens. just rest and you'll be okay." he gave the younger boy a hug before heading out of the room. chase laid back down on his bed and let out a sigh of relief since his phone wasn't vibrating anymore.

he finally fell asleep and took a three hour nap, waking up only when he heard people arguing before the front door was slammed shut. he rolled his eyes at how stupid his family could be and sat up, pushing the hair out of his face. he still felt miserable and wanted nothing more but to just die in that moment. he trudged out to the pool and sat crisscross by the edge.

"you look like you're debating whether or not you want to drown." chase didn't bother looking away from the clear water as he shrugged his shoulders. "are you okay?"

the sixteen year old looked up at tom. "no." he sighed, "and no, i don't know what's wrong."

tom frowned, sitting next to the boy. "okay." he didn't say anything else as he watched chase watch the lightly moving water. they remained in silence for a good half hour before chase finally looked at tom.

"why are you still here?"

the brunet pursed his lips, "i don't want to leave you alone." chase's heart pounded in his chest and he was still questioning himself. why the hell was he suddenly feeling like this? he didn't like it; the feeling. "let's get you some food and then off to bed."

"where's alec?" chase mumbled as tom helped him stand up.

"he had a game; asked if i could come over and sit with you." tom helped the younger boy sit on a barstool and opened the cabinet to pull out peanut butter and bread. he grabbed the jelly from the fridge and made two sandwiches, handing one to chase. chase quietly thanked him and ate the sandwich a little faster than he intended.

the two headed to chase's room and tom sat next to the boy on the bed as chase laid back under the covers. tom's fingers lightly raked through chase's hair until the younger boy was asleep.

tom remained seated on the bed, playing games on his phone and looked over at the boy every once in awhile to make sure he was still breathing. alec soon came in, sweaty and dirty. "how is he?"

"good." tom gave his best friend a reassuring smile. "if it's cool i'm just gonna stay here to keep an eye on him. maybe let him wake up to someone he fell asleep next to to see how he feels?"

alec nodded, "sure. i'm gonna shower and i'll cons hang out for awhile." tom gave him a nod and watched as the red head left the room, closing the door behind him.
