My breaths quickened, getting shallower as I ran throughout the graveyard. Deep growls followed my path. I sped up, constantly looking over my shoulder as if to keep the monsters at bay. The black mist got closer and the growls got louder. As I stepped over another gravestone, a cold, grey hand reached and grabbed my foot, pulling me into the abyss.

I awoke in a frenzy, beads of sweat trickling down my face. My beating heart slowed, as I attempted to recover from the dream. This was the third nightmare I had this week, all of them having the same growls. The clock read about midnight, just a couple hours after I fell asleep.

I sighed and crawled off of the lonely mattress that sat in the corner of my empty room. I was too lazy to put my bed together before the first day of school. My feet lazily led me to the large window in my room, with a view of the hooded forest behind my house.

I sat down on the wide windowsill, laying my head drowsily on the cold window. My eyes scanned the forest, searching for any excuse to venture out into the woods. They stopped on a dark silhouette, barely visible through the brush. I couldn't tell whether it was a person or an animal, all I saw was their distinct amber eyes. The figure quickly disappeared after I noticed it, causing a frown to form on my face.

I made my way over to my makeshift bed and got right back to my sleeping position. I needed all the rest I could get before tomorrow.

The eerie silence of a dreamless sleep was interrupted by the incessant sound of a blaring horn. I reached a hand out to forcefully stop the sound, sending my alarm flying off of my wooden nightstand.

For the next twenty minutes, I stood under the steaming water, scenes from my dream dancing around in my brain. When my other alarm went off, I snapped back to reality and quickly got dressed. I didn't realize it at first, but my stress was slowly creeping up on me. With it being the first day for me and it already being the middle of the school year, I had a lot of catching up to do. My train of thought was interrupted by a knock at the door.

"Hey Kennedy, it's time to go." My mother announced, a slight smile pulling at the corners of her mouth.

"Okay, I'll be downstairs."

She left the room, leaving the door opened which got me slightly agitated. I checked myself in the mirror one last time, gathered my bag and phone, and went outside to the car.

The sun was already out, portraying a look of a warm, bright day, but in reality, I could see my breath in front of my face. It was expected though since we were in the fall season.

I melted into the heated car, glad to be out of the autumn weather. Before I could buckle my seatbelt, my mom pulled out of the driveway, causing me to jump. My mom merely laughed in response. I finished with my seatbelt and laughed. "And this is why Dad taught me how to drive."

"Really funny." My mom said sarcastically.

She drove out of the quiet neighborhood onto the main road, passing lots of buildings including a building labeled Mystic Grill.

"So I've been meaning to talk to you about something," my mom adjusted her rearview mirror so she could watch me as we were talking. "I know back in North Carolina things were tough, but I'm asking you, please don't let your aggression get the best of you here. This is a quiet town, I don't want anything to happen."

"Mom," I took a breath in, "That was a long time ago, I'm better now. Plus she had it coming."

"I mean, yeah, but she didn't deserve to get her nose broken."

"Well, she shouldn't have started it."

"But did you break any bones?" She looked at me sharply, trying to prove a point. I sealed my lips shut in utter defeat. She continued, "I didn't think so."
