There's tons of Pokémon mods and hacked games. You see them everywhere. Some are funny, some are weird, some are crappy, and some are just plain creepy. I'm sure you've heard of tons of different creepy Pokemon games. I have too. I've played lots of them. However, there was one that definitely topped the rest.
Just as most of these stories go, I found an old Pokémon game at a yard sale. I know it's really cliché, but it's just what happened. I found an old Pokémon game that was entitled, "Pokemon follow edition". It was clearly a fan made game, but I had never heard of it before so I was pretty interested. Once the game was mine, I instantly headed home to test it out.
The cartridge was definitely worn down, but I was hoping that it would still work. I searched around until I found my old gameboy color. I wiped off the dust, and then stuck the cartridge inside. Luckily, my gameboy color was still mostly full of battery. I was happy that I was able to play it right away.
The game started out with a pikachu running across the screen. It stopped for a second and looked at the screen, and then ran off the screen. There were then two sprites that walked across the screen. One that appeared to red, and the other looked like red as well only the color was a lot darker. I thought it was strange that it had the sprites from the original red and blue games. The Pokémon logo then appeared in screen with the title. I actually thought that it was pretty neat that the creator of this game had put so much effort into the game, even if it was just on the intro.
Once I started out the game, I never talked to anyone. It just had a select screen with the original kanto starters, squirtle, charmander, and bulbasaur. I love charizard, so I chose charmander. The colors were very dark. This didn't even feel like a hacked game, it felt like some kind of rejected Pokémon game.
Once I chose my starter, the screen went black for a second, before showing my sprite standing outside of a Pokémon center. This game was definitely different, but I thought it would be a fun adventure.
I began walking around a little and walked into a patch of grass. I checked my bag and was surprised to find two potions and six poke balls. I didn't even need to do anything to get them. I then started walking in circles until I encountered a wild level two rattata. I caught it, and then continued my way. It was very strange to me that there were no trainers around. Not a single one. I just roamed around in the many patches of grass without anyone challenging me to a battle.
As I continued walking, I saw the sprite that was following me in the sight intro to the game. It began walking towards me. I don't know what it was about it, but I just wanted to stay away from it. I made my character walk away from it and just try to find the next town or something.
I continued to walk in the grass and encounter Pokemon, yet no trainers, until I finally made it to a town. It didn't have a name or anything. I ignored it, and then walked into the Pokémon center. As I healed my Pokémon, nurse joy said something out of the ordinary, "Stay safe out there".
I'd never seen nurse joy say anything like that before. And bedsides, what did she mean? Stay safe from what?
Once I exited the Pokémon center, the sprite began following me again. I began walking non-stop to make sure it wouldn't catch up to me. The game pretty much played like a normal Pokémon game with all of the wild Pokémon, however, there were still no other trainers. Even once I made it to the first gym, there was no gym leader to be found. I was able to walk inside, but there was no point in it.
I continued catching Pokemon and training them, but without trainers of gym leaders it felt like there was no point. The main thing I was focusing on was staying away from the strange sprite following me. If I wasn't really ahead of it and I stopped for a while then it would easily catch up to me and I would have to escape again. If I wasn't constantly moving, I wouldn't be safe. I felt so paranoid with the fact that it was constantly after me. I knew it was just s video game, but it was still very unsettling. I would've never imagined this cute little game being so creepy. The only sprites I saw in the game was the nurses at the Pokémon centers and of course, the strange sprite following me.
I felt so paranoid. I knew that it probably wasn't the best idea to keep playing, but I was just too curious. I was a major Pokémon fan. What Pokémon fan wouldn't be curious?
My paranoia grew worse once I entered a dark cave. I knew the sprite was still following me, and it made me feel less safe to be in a cave where it could easily corner me or I could get lost.
I encountered the usual zubats and geodudes, but I just couldn't focus on the usual Pokémon catching and leveling up. I couldn't let it catch up to me. I don't know why, I just couldn't shake off that bad feeling.
I jumped once I saw the figure catching up to me. I tried finding the end of the cave, but I kept bumping into rocks and walls. I scrambled as I tried to get away. I felt genuinely felt and I don't know why. I let out a big sigh of relief once I saw the end of the cave. I know that the figure would still be following me, but at least I had more room to move so I could escape. I didn't understand how it caught up to me so fast.
I had figured out that I was safe only in the Pokémon center. I took the time to work on my team, and pulling myself together. I was really letting this game get to me. I felt like I was being watched.
I left the Pokémon center and tried moving away as quickly as possible. I couldn't see the sprite, but I knew that it had to be nearby. At this point, i didn't even know where I was. It was just town after town. It seemed so pointless. The only point was to keep getting away from the strange trainer.
I froze once I realized I needed rick smash to move on. I didn't have any Pokémon with that move. I began walking around but the sprite was getting closer and closer. I didn't know where to go. I tried to make it into the door of the Pokémon center, but the sprite had gotten me. My sprite turned around without me doing anything and looked at the creepy trainer. My gameboy then shut off and went black. I tried turning it back on, but it didn't work. I don't understand the purpose of the game, except for the fact that it broke my gameboy color. However, I still have that strange feeling of being watched and followed.
