Asher's POV
"Attention: the meeting will begin in thirty seconds. Please sit in your seats," the intercom crackled above me. I waved bye to Dave and made my way to the fourth row. I sat down, careful to keep my wings in place. I turned my ruby red eyes to the door as Dexter Knight walked in.
I immediately sat up straighter as my eyes widened. Dexter Knight, or any of the Big Three for that matter, never showed, so whatever this mission was, it was important.
My eyes followed his movement across the platform he was on. His short dark brown hair was spiked up slightly in the front. He wore an all black suit, which contrasted greatly with his pale skin. He held a stack of papers in his hands. His cold black eyes scanned the room before landing on me. We made eye contact for a few seconds before he turned his attention back to the stack of papers in his hands.
He slammed the papers on the podium in front of him, making everyone jump. He looked up at his audience, a relatively small group of about fifty people―erm, demons―and began speaking.
"As you all know, we are always looking for candidates to become one of us." Everyone just nodded, no one would dare speak when one of the Big Three was speaking. "Well, we may have found one. And not just your average, run-of-the-mill candidate, either. We believe we may have found a POH."
This time, murmurs of surprise rose up before quieting down again. Dexter continued. "As of now, we don't have a name for our candidate, only a face―"
A picture flashed on the screen behind him. It showed a young boy, maybe seventeen or eighteen, with light brown hair swept to one side of his forehead. He had a slight babyface, with his round rosy cheeks and small lopsided smile.
I can't help but feel like I've seen this guy before...
I tensed as I realized where I saw him before.
The bridge! He was the kid on the bridge!
"―but that will soon change," Dexter Knight continued. The image disappeared. "As many of you know, only a handful of you all can go on a mission at once. I'm sorry to say that will not be happening."
Groans were heard from the crowd. I held my breath, hoping that he wasn't about to say what I think he was about to say.
"Only one person is able to go."
No, no, no, please not me, I thought. I struggled to keep my face neutral, devoid of any emotion.
Dexter looked in my direction. Correction, he looked at me. "Asher."
I stood up and walked so I was standing beneath the platform. "Yes?"
"You will go to the human world, find this boy, and turn him."
"Yes, my Overwatcher."
"Face your comrades." I did as I was told. "Tonight may be the last night you spend here. If you do not come back with the boy, don't come back at all." I nodded once in understanding.
"The meeting is over! Go back to your places. No one is to go to the human world or interfere with the mission. Do not say a word about this meeting to anyone or you will be dealing with me personally."
As everyone filed out of the room, Dexter placed a hand on my shoulder and led me over to the stack of papers. "Here are the specific details of what you must do. Look these over. You will leave first thing tomorrow."
I took the papers and nodded my head once again. "Yes, Overwatcher."
***
I sighed as I placed the final paper in the bag. I was allowed to bring only one bag. In it, I had the papers Dexter gave me, my cell phone, the charger, and a notebook. Everything else I would need, like a house, clothes, and an alibi, have been provided. I waved goodbye to Domi and stepped closer to the portal.
